Technical Service Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C (01-06 Black Edition)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C models spanning the 2001–2006 production era represent the pinnacle of the classic round reel design. These "Black Edition" reels are prized for their stainless steel ball bearings and rugged brass internals. To maintain the smooth cranking power and long-distance casting these reels are famous for, a structured maintenance routine is essential.

1. Disassembly and Inspection

To begin the overhaul, ensure the reel is in a neutral state by backing off the drag and mechanical tensioner.

  • Handle Side Removal: Back out the three bridge screws on the right side plate. Gently pull the plate away. You will see the main gear stack and the pinion yoke assembly.

  • Spool and Frame: Lift the spool out of the frame. Inspect the spool shaft for any signs of scoring or debris. On the 01-06 models, check the centrifugal brake blocks on the spool flange; these should slide freely on their pins.

  • Cleaning: Use a dedicated solvent or isopropyl alcohol to strip old, gummy lubricants from the brass and steel components. Pay close attention to the teeth of the gears.

2. Drivetrain Lubrication (Grease)

The power transmission components require a lubricant that can withstand high pressure and prevent corrosion.

  • Main Gear: Apply Deuthlon Grease to the teeth of the large brass main gear. Use a small brush to ensure the grease is distributed into every valley of the gear teeth. This provides a cushioning effect that eliminates "gear feel" during the retrieve.

  • Pinion Gear: Coat the Pinion Gear with Deuthlon Grease. Since this gear engages directly with the spool shaft under high RPMs during the cast and high torque during the retrieve, the stay-put properties of this grease are vital for longevity.

3. Levelwind and Oscillation Maintenance (Oil)

The levelwind system is the most frequent cause of "casting drag." To keep the line lay perfectly even and the cast effortless, lighter lubrication is required.

  • Worm Shaft: Clean the "diamond" grooves of the worm gear thoroughly. Apply two to three drops of Deuthlon Oil across the length of the shaft. This oil is formulated to resist water washout while providing a low-friction surface for the line guide pawl.

  • Idler Gears: Locate the plastic Idler Gears inside the side plate and on the frame. These gears synchronize the spool rotation with the levelwind. Lubricate these strictly with Deuthlon Oil. Using grease here is a common mistake that creates significant rotational resistance, shortening your casting distance.

4. Bearing and Spool Care

The "C" in 6000C stands for the ball bearings that support the spool.

  • Bearing Service: Remove the bearings from the side plate and tension cap. Once cleaned and dried, apply one drop of Deuthlon Oil to each. This ensures the bearings can reach maximum RPMs without overheating.

  • Brake Plate: Wipe the inner circumference of the brake drum (the brass ring inside the side plate) with a dry cloth. A microscopic film of oil can be used to quieten the brakes, but a bone-dry drum offers the most consistent braking force.

5. Final Assembly

  1. Re-insert the Spool: Ensure the centrifugal weights are clicked into your preferred setting.

  2. Align the Side Plate: Guide the pinion gear onto the spool shaft and press the side plate flush against the frame. Tighten the thumb screws in a staggered pattern to ensure even pressure.

  3. Handle Stack: Replace the star drag, ensuring the spring washers are "nested" (facing each other like parentheses) to provide the correct tension range.

  4. Operational Check: Disengage the spool and spin it; it should rotate silently. Engage the drive and turn the handle; the levelwind should travel smoothly across the entire width of the spool without clicking.
