Technical Service Protocol: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000 (Foot Number 05-01)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000, identified by foot number 05-01, is a robust, large-capacity round reel designed for high-endurance fishing. This specific production run represents a modern era of the 6000-series, benefiting from tighter manufacturing tolerances while maintaining the classic synchronized levelwind system. Because the line guide moves during both the retrieve and the cast, managing internal friction is the single most important factor in maintaining performance.
To achieve maximum mechanical efficiency, we recommend a dual-lubricant strategy using Deuthlon Reel Power Oil for high-velocity components and Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease for the heavy-load drive system.
Phase 1: Disassembly and Internal Decontamination
Begin by loosening the three knurled thumb screws on the drive-side plate. Separate the plate from the frame and extract the spool and the levelwind assembly.
For the 05-01 model, it is critical to strip away all "varnished" or oxidized factory grease. Use a specialized reel cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to clean the brass main gear, stainless steel pinion, and the worm shaft to bare metal.
Ensure the gear teeth are free of any debris or old lubricant "sludge." Dry all components completely with a lint-free cloth; any residual cleaner will prevent new lubricants from adhering correctly to the metal surfaces.
Phase 2: Drive System Lubrication (High Torque)
The 6000 is built for winching power. The interface between the gears bears the brunt of the pressure when fighting heavy fish or pulling high-resistance lures like deep crankbaits.
-
Main Gear: Brush a thin, uniform layer of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease onto the teeth. This grease is formulated to stay in the teeth under load, providing a silent, "cushioned" retrieve.
-
Pinion & Yoke: Apply a light coating to the pinion gear and the clutch yoke. This ensures the thumb bar engages and disengages with a crisp, smooth click and protects against metal-on-metal galling.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System Optimization (High Velocity)
In the 6000, the levelwind is always moving. Using heavy grease here is a common error that creates fluid drag, attracting grit and significantly shortening your casting distance.
-
Worm Shaft: Apply 1–2 drops of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the grooves. This allows the line guide to oscillate with virtually zero resistance.
-
Idler Gears: These gears bridge the power from the spinning spool to the levelwind. Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the idler gear spindles. This ensures the gear train remains "light," preventing the oscillation system from bogging down the spool during a long cast.
Phase 4: Spool Support and Tension Management
Consistency in your cast is achieved by maintaining the spool shaft ends and the tension system with a high-speed synthetic oil.
-
Spool Shaft: Polish the ends of the stainless steel spool spindle until they are mirror-bright. Apply a single drop of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to each end of the shaft where it seats into the side plate.
-
Tension Shims: Apply a tiny amount of oil to the copper shims inside the cast control caps. This provides a protective hydraulic film that ensures a smooth, consistent spool speed and prevents the shaft from wearing into the shim during high-speed rotation.
Final Reassembly and Tuning
Reassemble the side plates and secure the handle. Adjust the cast control knob until the spool has the slightest hint of side-to-side play. This ensures the spool is not over-compressed, allowing the Deuthlon lubricants to perform at their highest level.
By using specialized grease for the heavy-wear gears and high-speed oil for the oscillation parts, you've optimized your 05-01 to be both a powerful winch and a long-distance casting machine.
