Ambassadeur 5601CB Technical Service & Repair Guide

The Ambassadeur 5601CB (Foot Number 09 02) is a classic left-handed round reel designed with the self-casting "Power Wheel" feature. To maintain the precision and smooth operation of this Swedish-engineered tool, a systematic service is required. This guide focuses on a full mechanical restoration using Deuthlon high-performance lubricants.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Inspection

  1. Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three captive thumb screws on the left side plate. Carefully pull the side plate assembly away from the frame.

  2. Spool Extraction: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the centrifugal brake blocks and the spool spindle for any signs of salt buildup or debris.

  3. Drive Train Access: Remove the handle nut retainer, handle nut, and handle. Remove the star drag and the two curved tension washers. Lift the side plate to reveal the main gear, pinion gear, and drag stack.

  4. Levelwind Removal: Unscrew the line guide nut and remove the pawl. Slide the worm shaft and its protective shroud out of the frame.

Phase 2: Cleaning and Degreasing

Optimal performance with Deuthlon products requires the total removal of old, degraded lubricants.

  • Submerge the Main Gear, Pinion Gear, and Worm Shaft in a degreasing agent. Use a brush to ensure all teeth are free of grit.

  • Clean the Idler Gear (the white gear inside the frame). This gear is critical for synchronization and must be perfectly clean.

  • Dry all parts thoroughly with a lint-free cloth or compressed air.

Phase 3: Strategic Lubrication

The 5601CB benefits from a dual-viscosity lubrication strategy: heavy-duty grease for torque and light oil for speed.

Drive Train and Power (Grease)

The internal gears handle significant pressure during the retrieve and lure presentation.

  • Main Gear: Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth. This grease provides a resilient film that reduces mechanical noise and vibration.

  • Pinion Gear: Apply Deuthlon Reel Grease to the pinion teeth and the yoke. This ensures a smooth transition when the thumb bar is engaged and prevents wear on the gear interfaces.

Levelwind and High-RPM Components (Oil)

To maximize casting distance, the parts that oscillate or spin during the cast must remain low-friction.

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft. Oil allows the carriage to move with minimal resistance, ensuring an even line lay without slowing down the spool.

  • Idler Gears: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gears. Since these gears transfer motion to the levelwind, using oil instead of grease eliminates parasitic drag, allowing the reel to achieve higher RPMs during a cast.

  • Spool Bearings: Clean the bearings and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each.

Phase 4: Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Reinstall Levelwind: Place the worm gear and line guide back into the frame. Install the pawl and secure the cap.

  2. Drive Assembly: Seat the pinion gear in the yoke and place the main gear onto the drive shaft. Ensure the drag washers are seated in the correct sequence.

  3. Final Assembly: Reinsert the spool. Align the side plate and tighten the thumb screws. Reattach the star drag, handle, and nut.

  4. Tuning: Adjust the mechanical tension knob on the side plate until the spool has minimal side-to-side play.

Using Deuthlon Reel Grease on the gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler gears provides the Ambassadeur 5601CB with superior protection and a professional-grade casting feel.
