Comprehensive Maintenance Article: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5601Ab (08-01)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5601Ab (08-01) is a specialized left-hand drive round reel featuring the "Anti-Backlash" system. This unique design is engineered to assist anglers in managing spool overruns, but the mechanical complexity of the 08-01 revision requires precise lubrication to function correctly. Without regular maintenance, the specialized braking components can become sluggish, negating the benefits of the "Ab" technology.

To restore the 5601Ab to its original smooth operation, we utilize the high-performance combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.

Step 1: Breakdown and Internal Access

Unscrew the three thumb screws on the handle-side plate and carefully remove the assembly. Take out the spool and the Anti-Backlash bridge components. For this specific model, it is vital to keep the braking parts organized, as their orientation is critical for the reel's anti-overrun feature.

Step 2: Solvent Cleaning and Preparation

Old, hardened lubricants can cause the 5601Ab's braking system to stick.

  • Degreasing: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a cleaning solvent.

  • Detailing: Use a soft brush to remove all grit from the teeth of the drive gears and the grooves of the levelwind. Ensure every component is dry and free of residue before re-lubricating.

Step 3: High-Torque Gear Lubrication

The 5601Ab relies on a brass drive system to provide its cranking power. These metal-to-metal contact points require a lubricant that can handle high loads without migrating.

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a consistent coating of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the gear teeth. This grease creates a durable, high-pressure film that prevents the gears from grinding or wearing down prematurely. Its moisture-repelling formula is especially useful for maintaining the integrity of the gears in humid or wet conditions.

Step 4: Levelwind and Idler System Service

In the Ambassadeur 08-01, the levelwind is synchronized with the spool. To ensure this mechanism does not drag down your casting distance, you must use a low-viscosity lubricant.

  • Worm Shaft (Levelwind): Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the grooves of the worm gear. This specialized oil provides a slick, fast-moving surface that allows the line guide to oscillate effortlessly.

  • Idler Gears: These plastic gears connect the spool to the levelwind assembly. Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gears. Using oil here instead of grease reduces the "start-up" friction, allowing the spool to spin up much more freely during a cast.

Step 5: Bearing Care and Reassembly

The spool bearings are the primary factor in how well the Anti-Backlash system interacts with the spool's rotation.

  1. Bearings: Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing. The "Dust-Free" technology in this oil helps prevent microscopic debris from fouling the bearing races, ensuring long-term casting smoothness.

  2. Assembly: Slide the spool back into the frame. Reattach the side plate and secure it with the thumb screws.

  3. Final Test: Turn the handle to ensure the levelwind moves smoothly and the gears engage silently. The combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease on the drive train and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind components ensures your 5601Ab remains a reliable, tangle-free tool.
