Technical Service and Repair Article: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600WS (14-00)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600WS (14-00) is a specialized right-hand drive round reel that incorporates the "Wheel Spin" (WS) design philosophy, focusing on high-efficiency spool rotation and consistent line management. The 14-00 revision is celebrated for its balanced feel and the use of precision-cut brass internals. Because the WS model is designed to maximize spool startup speed, the choice of lubricants is the most critical factor in preserving its "high-spin" characteristics.
To ensure this reel maintains its mechanical advantage, we recommend a service utilizing Deuthlon Reel Grease for high-load areas and Deuthlon Reel Oil for high-speed components.
Step 1: Breakdown and Cleaning
Begin by loosening the three side plate thumb screws and removing the right-side assembly. Extract the spool and the centrifugal braking system. For the 5600WS, the interior must be surgically clean to allow the high-speed components to function without drag.
-
Degreasing: Submerge the main drive gear, pinion, and worm shaft in a cleaning solvent.
-
Detailed Scrub: Use a soft brush to remove old, emulsified lubricants from the gear teeth. Pay close attention to the 14-00's drive stack, ensuring any brass oxidation is gently cleared away.
Step 2: Drive Train Lubrication (Load-Bearing)
The main gear and pinion gear in the 5600WS are the primary contact points during a fight. These parts require a lubricant that can withstand the pressure of a loaded retrieve without being displaced.
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a light, even coating of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the main gear and the pinion. This grease is formulated with high-tenacity polymers that stay bonded to the metal surfaces, providing a vibration-dampening barrier. This results in a much smoother "gear feel" and prevents the metal galling that occurs when standard greases thin out under heat.
Step 3: Levelwind and Idler System Service (Kinetic)
The "Wheel Spin" performance of this reel relies on reducing the parasitic drag caused by the synchronized levelwind. Since the line guide moves during the cast, it must be as frictionless as possible.
-
Levelwind Worm Shaft: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the grooves of the worm shaft. Oil provides significantly less resistance than grease, allowing the line guide to oscillate rapidly and fluidly across the frame.
-
Idler Gears: These gears transfer energy from the spool to the levelwind. Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gears and their mounting posts. Using oil here instead of grease allows the gears to spin up with less effort, which is essential for casting lighter lures with the 5600WS.
Step 4: Spool Bearing Maintenance
The spool bearings are the engine of the 5600WS. To keep them running at maximum RPMs, they must be treated with a high-speed lubricant.
-
Bearing Lubrication: Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing. Its unique "Dust-Free" formula helps repel contaminants that typically slow down standard bearings over time.
-
Reassembly: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the centrifugal brake weights are correctly positioned.
-
Final Calibration: Align the side plate and tighten the thumb screws. Function-check the reel by disengaging the spool and checking the free-spin time.
Maintenance Performance Chart
| Component | Lubricant Type | Result |
| Main Gear | Deuthlon Reel Grease | Silent, powerful retrieve under load. |
| Pinion Gear | Deuthlon Reel Grease | Sustained gear alignment and wear protection. |
| Worm Shaft | Deuthlon Reel Oil | Superior casting distance and line lay. |
| Idler Gears | Deuthlon Reel Oil | Reduced rotational inertia for faster startup. |
| Spool Bearings | Deuthlon Reel Oil | Protected, high-speed rotation. |
