Professional Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600CB (06-03)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600CB (06-03) is a refined iteration of the classic "Self-Braking" round reel. The 06-03 revision is characterized by its Swedish-made precision and a synchronized levelwind system that moves in tandem with the spool during the cast. Because the "CB" (Centrifugal Braking) system depends on the spool's ability to spin freely to engage the mechanical weights correctly, any internal "sludge" or aged grease will directly negatively impact your casting distance and control.

To restore this reel to peak efficiency, we recommend a precision service using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Internal Assessment

Begin by loosening the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate and removing the assembly to expose the drive bridge. Extract the spool and inspect the centrifugal brake hub. In the 06-03 model, it is critical to ensure the brake race (the metal ring inside the side plate) is clean and dry. Any oil migration to this race will cause the braking weights to slip, leading to unpredictable backlashes.

Phase 2: Systematic Degreasing

For modern synthetic lubricants to perform as intended, the internal components must be stripped of all old, oxidized grease and environmental grit.

  • Drive Train: Submerge the main drive gear and the pinion gear in a high-quality solvent. Use a soft brush to clear the gear teeth of any debris.

  • Levelwind Assembly: Thoroughly degrease the worm shaft and the idler gears. Ensure the levelwind pawl is free of flat spots or metallic shavings.

Phase 3: High-Torque Gear Lubrication

The 5600CB utilizes a robust gear set designed for consistent cranking power. These contact points require a lubricant that provides a high-strength film to prevent metal-on-metal wear under load.

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a thin, even coating of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the main gear and the pinion gear. This grease is formulated with high-film-strength additives that create a durable cushion, effectively dampening gear vibration and noise. Its specialized formula ensures the grease stays bonded to the gear teeth, preventing it from being slung into the drag stack.

Phase 4: Levelwind and Idler System Service (Kinetic)

Because the levelwind is synchronized, the line guide moves during the cast. To prevent this system from acting as a mechanical brake on your lure, you must use a low-viscosity approach.

  • Worm Shaft (Levelwind): Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the grooves of the worm shaft. Oil provides a much faster, slicker surface than grease, allowing the line guide to oscillate effortlessly across the frame.

  • Idler Gears: These gears bridge the rotation between the spool and the levelwind. Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gears and their mounting posts. Using oil here instead of grease significantly lowers the rotational inertia, which is essential for maintaining the high-speed startup required for modern casting.

Phase 5: Spool Bearings and Final Reassembly

The spool bearings are the engine of your casting performance and must be kept in pristine condition.

  1. Bearing Care: Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each cleaned spool bearing. Its "Dust-Free" technology helps repel fine particles, ensuring the bearings stay fast and quiet over time.

  2. Reassembly: Slide the spool back into the frame. Align the side plate assembly and secure the thumb screws.

  3. Function Check: Engage the free-spool and verify that the levelwind travels fluidly. The combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease on the drive gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind components ensures your 5600CB operates with professional-grade fluidity.
