Technical Restoration Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600CA (80-01-00)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600CA (80-01-00) is a landmark model in the history of round reels, representing the early 1980s transition toward enhanced ergonomics. This "palming cup" model was one of the first to successfully integrate the thumb-bar spool release into the classic Ambassadeur frame. Because the 80-01-00 revision is now over 40 years old, it commonly suffers from "grease-lock"—a condition where original petroleum-based lubricants have dehydrated into a hard, shellac-like substance that hampers the clutch and gears.
To restore this vintage powerhouse to a "better-than-factory" feel, we recommend a precision service using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.
Step 1: Disassembly and Vintage Inspection
Loosen the three knurled thumb screws and remove the handle-side plate. Carefully extract the spool and the drive bridge.
-
The 80s Clutch System: Inspect the white plastic release trigger (thumb bar) and the connecting linkage. In the 80-01-00 model, the leaf springs and engagement pins are often encrusted with dried grease. Use a soft cloth to clean these parts to avoid stressing the vintage plastics.
-
Brake Blocks: Check the small black or white centrifugal brake weights on the spool. Ensure they move freely on the pins; if they are stuck, the reel will be nearly impossible to cast without backlashes.
Step 2: Deep Cleaning the Internal Drive
To ensure modern synthetic lubricants bond at a molecular level, the vintage brass and steel parts must be surgically clean.
-
Main Gear & Pinion: Submerge the brass main gear and the pinion gear in a high-quality solvent. Use a soft brush to clear every tooth.
-
Worm Shaft & Idlers: Thoroughly degrease the levelwind worm shaft and the plastic idler gears. Note that in the 1980 revision, the idler gear posts are integrated into the frame; ensure these are polished and free of grit.
Step 3: High-Torque Gear Lubrication
The 5600CA relies on its heavy-duty brass main gear for its legendary cranking power.
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a thin, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the gear teeth. This grease features high-film-strength additives that "cushion" the metal-on-metal contact, silencing the "gear growl" typical of older reels and providing a modern, buttery-smooth retrieve. It also acts as a moisture barrier, protecting the vintage brass from oxidation.
Step 4: Levelwind and Idler System Service (Kinetic)
The synchronized levelwind on the 5600CA moves during the cast, creating mechanical drag. Reducing this friction is the key to achieving modern casting distances with a vintage reel.
-
Worm Shaft (Levelwind): Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the grooves of the worm shaft. Unlike grease, which "chokes" the oscillation at high speeds, this oil provides a slick, fast-moving surface.
-
Idler Gears: These gears link the spool to the levelwind. Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gears and their mounting posts. Using oil here instead of grease significantly lowers start-up inertia, allowing the heavy vintage spool to accelerate much faster.
Step 5: Bearing Restoration and Final Reassembly
The original bearings in an 80-01-00 model are often still functional if properly maintained.
-
Bearing Service: After a solvent flush and dry, apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each spool bearing. The "Dust-Free" technology prevents micro-particulates from sticking to the bearing races, extending the time between services.
-
Reassembly: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the brake blocks are in the "active" position. Align the side plate and secure the thumb screws.
-
Function Check: Press the thumb bar. The spool should drop instantly. Turn the handle to engage the gears—the click should be crisp and the rotation silent.
