Technical Maintenance Protocol: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600C5 Mag-X (16 00)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600C5 Mag-X (16 00) is a high-performance, forest green and gold round reel that represents one of the most versatile casting platforms in the Ambassadeur lineage. The "C5" indicates a five-bearing system (including a specialized Instant Anti-Reverse), while the "Mag-X" system provides a dual-braking advantage: a traditional 6-pin centrifugal brake for the start of the cast and an external linear magnetic slider for fine-tuning during the lure's flight.
The 16 00 revision is structurally similar to the 16 01, but keeping the magnetic carriage and the tight-tolerance C5 internals perfectly lubricated is essential for maintaining its "frictionless" reputation. For professional results, we recommend Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.
Step 1: Systematic Disassembly & Cleaning
Remove the three knurled thumb screws from the handle side plate and extract the internal bridge. Remove the spool to access the frame and the Mag-X carriage.
-
Mag-X Carriage Inspection: On the non-handle side plate, inspect the magnetic sliding mechanism. Dust and salt can accumulate behind the magnets, causing the external slider to feel gritty or stick.
-
Degreasing: Submerge the brass main gear and the pinion gear in a cleaning solvent. Use a soft brush to clear old, oxidized grease from the gear teeth and the anti-reverse bearing sleeve.
Step 2: High-Torque Gear Lubrication
The 5600C5 depends on its precision gear set to maintain the "C-Series" smoothness under the load of a heavy retrieve.
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a light, even coating of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth. This grease is engineered with high-film-strength additives that create a protective cushion, dampening gear vibration and preventing metal galling. It is specifically formulated to stay on the teeth, preventing migration into the Mag-X brake race or the drag stack.
Step 3: Levelwind and Idler System Service (Kinetic)
Because the 5600C5 features a synchronized levelwind, the line guide oscillates during the cast. Any mechanical drag here acts as a "secondary brake" that reduces casting distance.
-
Worm Shaft (Levelwind): Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the grooves of the worm gear. Oil provides a much faster, slicker surface than grease, allowing the line guide to track across the frame with minimal parasitic drag.
-
Idler Gears: These gears link the spool’s rotation to the levelwind. Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gears and their mounting posts. Using oil instead of grease significantly lowers start-up inertia, which is critical for making long, effortless casts.
Step 4: Spool Bearing Optimization
The C5’s signature "fluid" feel is primarily driven by its high-quality stainless steel bearings.
-
Bearing Service: Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each cleaned spool bearing. Its "Dust-Free" technology helps repel contaminants, ensuring the bearings stay fast and quiet.
-
Reassembly: Slide the spool back into the frame. Align the side plate and secure the thumb screws.
-
Final Calibration: Adjust the external Mag-X slider to ensure it moves fluidly from "Min" to "Max." Tighten the mechanical tension knob until spool side-play just disappears.
