Service and Restoration Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5600 Plus (84-0)
The Ambassadeur 5600 Plus (84-0) is a classic mid-80s round reel that introduced the "Plus" series ergonomics, featuring a specialized palming side plate and the Ultra Cast spool design. This (84-0) iteration is highly regarded for its precision brass gearing and its ability to handle both freshwater and light saltwater applications. To keep this vintage machine operating at its peak, a meticulous teardown and a specific lubrication regimen using premium synthetics are required.
Phase 1: Disassembly and Cleaning
Because the 5600 Plus relies on a fixed spool shaft (Ultra Cast design), cleanliness is the most critical factor in maintaining casting distance.
-
Removing the Right Side Plate: Loosen the three captive thumb screws on the handle-side plate. Carefully pull the plate assembly away from the frame.
-
Spool Extraction: Slide the spool out of the frame. You will notice the spool spins on a stationary shaft. Inspect the interior of the spool where the bearings sit; any old, dried grease here will act as a brake.
-
Drive Train Access: Remove the handle, star drag, and the tension washers. Lift the side plate cover to expose the brass main gear and the stainless steel pinion gear.
-
Deep Degreasing: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a high-quality solvent. Use a soft brush to ensure no old residue remains in the gear teeth. Ensure all parts are bone-dry before re-lubricating.
Phase 2: Strategic Lubrication with Deuthlon
To restore the 5600 Plus to its original smoothness, we recommend using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil. These products provide a superior film strength that vintage metals require for long-term protection.
Applying Deuthlon Reel Grease:
-
Main Drive Gear: Apply a light, uniform coating of grease to each tooth of the large brass drive gear. This provides a durable cushion that protects the gear teeth and ensures a silent, powerful retrieve.
-
Pinion Gear: Coat the teeth of the pinion gear and the internal slot where it interfaces with the spool. Proper lubrication here is essential for preventing wear and ensuring the reel engages crisply.
-
Clutch & Kick Lever: Apply a micro-layer of grease to the sliding metal surfaces of the clutch to ensure the thumb bar operates with a positive, tactile click.
Applying Deuthlon Reel Oil:
-
Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of oil to the spiral worm gear. Since the levelwind is always engaged during the cast on this model, oil provides the low-viscosity protection needed to minimize friction.
-
Idler Gears: These plastic gears drive the line-lay system. A light coating of oil ensures they rotate with minimal inertia, which is vital for maintaining the casting efficiency of the "Plus" series.
-
Spool Bearings: Flush the bearings and apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon oil to each. This thin film allows for maximum RPM without the "clogging" effect of heavier lubricants.
Phase 3: Reassembly and Testing
-
Seat the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the fixed shaft is clean and the bearings are seated properly.
-
Housing Alignment: Position the side plate over the frame, ensuring the pinion gear aligns with the spool. Hand-tighten the thumb screws snugly.
-
Check the Oscillation: Rotate the handle to verify that the levelwind tracks smoothly and evenly across the front of the reel.
-
Final Spin Test: Disengage the thumb bar. The spool should spin silently and freely. Adjust the mechanical tension knob to eliminate side-play, allowing the 5600 Plus to handle the rotational load efficiently.
