Ambassadeur 5501C3 (01-06) Comprehensive Service Guide
The Ambassadeur 5501C3 (01-06) is a stalwart of the Abu Garcia lineup, prized for its left-hand retrieve and "made in Sweden" reliability. The 01-06 designation refers to a specific production blueprint where the reel’s balance of weight and casting fluidness was perfected. To maintain the integrity of this classic round reel, a deep service utilizing high-performance lubricants is the best investment an angler can make.
Disassembly and Component Evaluation
To begin the overhaul of your 5501C3, remove the handle, star drag, and the three thumb screws on the drive side plate.
-
The Spool Assembly: Inspect the spool shaft for any micro-burrs. Even a tiny scratch can impede the sliding motion of the pinion gear.
-
The Pawl and Worm Gear: Unscrew the capped nut on the bottom of the levelwind. Remove the crescent-shaped pawl. If the tips of the pawl are rounded, replace it immediately to prevent the levelwind from jamming.
-
The Main Drive: Remove the main gear and the drag washers. The 01-06 series often features a multi-disc drag system; ensure these are kept in the exact order they were removed.
The Cleaning Process
Because the Ambassadeur 5501C3 is a synchronized reel, the levelwind moves constantly. This means internal debris travels quickly through the reel. Use a specialized reel cleaner to strip old, gummy lubricants from the frame and gear teeth. Ensure the idler gears (the white plastic cogs inside the non-handle side plate) are completely free of grit.
Advanced Lubrication with Deuthlon
For a professional-grade finish, we recommend the use of Deuthlon Reel Oil and Deuthlon Reel Grease. These products provide a unique molecular bond that prevents "sling-off" during high-speed casts.
Levelwind and Idler Care (Oil)
The levelwind system is the primary source of friction during a cast.
-
Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the length of the worm gear. Oil is preferred over grease here because it does not collect as much wind-blown dust and salt, keeping the movement crisp.
-
Idler Gears: These plastic gears drive the synchronization. Lubricating them with Deuthlon Reel Oil minimizes the energy required to move the line guide, directly increasing your casting distance.
Power Train Protection (Grease)
The gears responsible for winching power require a heavier barrier.
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Brush Deuthlon Reel Grease onto the teeth of the large brass main gear and the small stainless pinion gear. This grease is formulated to withstand high pressure, ensuring the gears don't grind under the weight of a heavy fish.
-
Clutch Linkage: Apply a small dab of grease to the metal contact points of the thumb bar linkage to ensure a positive, "clicky" engagement every time.
Reassembly and Fine-Tuning
| Component Group | Lubricant Selection | Maintenance Goal |
| Main & Pinion Gears | Deuthlon Reel Grease | Maximum torque & gear longevity |
| Levelwind / Worm Gear | Deuthlon Reel Oil | Frictionless line tracking |
| Idler Cog System | Deuthlon Reel Oil | Smooth synchronization |
| Spool Bearings | Deuthlon Reel Oil | High RPM stability |
When re-seating the side plate on the 5501C3 (01-06), ensure the pinion gear is properly aligned with the spool's drive pin. Once assembled, spin the handle to distribute the Deuthlon Grease across the gear faces. You will notice an immediate reduction in mechanical vibration and a significantly smoother retrieve. Proper care with these specific lubricants ensures this reel remains a centerpiece of your tackle collection for decades.
