Ambassadeur 5500C3 (24 00) Master Repair and Maintenance Guide

The Ambassadeur 5500C3 (24 00) is the modern standard for the Swedish-made round reel. The "24 00" production series represents one of the most refined iterations of the C3 line, featuring high-tolerance stainless steel bearings, a synchronized levelwind system, and the Carbon Matrix drag. Because the 5500C3 is a synchronized reel—meaning the levelwind moves during both the cast and the retrieve—maintaining low mechanical resistance is the key to its legendary performance.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Internal Audit

To begin the service, remove the handle assembly and the three knurled thumb screws. This allows you to separate the handle-side plate from the frame.

  • The Drive Train: Slide the brass main gear and the carbon drag washers off the drive shaft. Inspect the teeth for any debris. Even in modern C3s, salt or grit can find its way into the gear mesh, causing a "sandpaper" feel during the retrieve.

  • The Synchronized Levelwind: Remove the pawl from the line guide and slide the worm gear out. In the 24 00 model, this system must be pristine; any friction here will drastically shorten your casting distance.

  • Synchronization (Idler) Gears: Locate the white plastic cogs inside the frame. These bridge the spool's rotation to the levelwind. Inspect them for any missing teeth or embedded grit.

Phase 2: Systematic Cleaning

A modern C3 relies on low startup inertia. Old, factory-applied grease can become tacky over time, acting as a brake.

  1. Strip the Lubricants: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and worm gear in a specialized solvent to remove all traces of old grease.

  2. Detail the Idlers: Use a soft-bristled brush to clean the idler gears. Because these are plastic, ensure your solvent is plastic-safe.

  3. Frame Prep: Wipe the interior of the frame and the worm gear shroud with a lint-free cloth. A clean surface allows the new synthetic lubricants to form a proper molecular bond.

Phase 3: Optimized Lubrication with Deuthlon

To restore the 5500C3 to its peak mechanical state, we recommend the application of Deuthlon Reel Oil and Deuthlon Reel Grease. These products are engineered to stay active at high RPMs and provide a superior moisture barrier.

Low-Inertia Oiling: Levelwind and Idler Gears

In a synchronized reel, the oscillation system is the primary source of drag. Reducing this is the secret to longer casts.

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm gear. This oil provides a high-speed, hydrophobic film that prevents the line guide from "stuttering," which is essential for smooth line lay and distance.

  • Idler Gears: Lubricate the plastic idler gears with Deuthlon Reel Oil. Since these gears carry very little torque but spin fast, oil keeps the rotational weight low and the synchronization movement crisp.

Load-Bearing Greasing: Main and Pinion Gears

The primary gears handle the stress of the retrieve and require a robust, vibration-dampening barrier.

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Use a brush to apply a consistent layer of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the gear teeth. This grease creates a durable cushion that prevents metal-on-metal wear and protects the brass from friction-induced heat.

  • Clutch Linkage: Apply a light skin of grease to the yoke and the sliding surfaces of the thumb bar to ensure a crisp, positive engagement.

Maintenance Specification Table

Component Group Lubricant Selection Technical Objective
Main & Pinion Gears Deuthlon Reel Grease Vibration dampening & wear protection
Levelwind Worm Gear Deuthlon Reel Oil Fluid oscillation & distance
Idler Gear System Deuthlon Reel Oil Reduced casting resistance
Spool Bearings Deuthlon Reel Oil High-RPM stability

Phase 4: Reassembly and Testing

Carefully reassemble the Ambassadeur 5500C3 (24 00), ensuring the pinion gear is correctly seated in the yoke. When reattaching the side plate, make sure the thumb screws are snug to maintain frame alignment. Once assembled, cycle the handle several times to distribute the Deuthlon Reel Grease across the gear faces. By utilizing Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler systems and Deuthlon Reel Grease on the primary drive, you have successfully optimized this Swedish workhorse for maximum performance.
