Technical Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5001C (Model 86-0)

The Ambassadeur 5001C (Model 86-0) is a classic left-hand retrieve reel from a pivotal era in Abu Garcia's history. The "86-0" production code indicates a 1986 manufacture date. This model is highly prized for its robust construction, featuring stainless steel ball bearings (the "C" designation) and a high-torque brass drive train.

Being a vintage reel, the 86-0 often suffers from dried-out factory grease that has turned into a sticky "varnish." To restore its legendary smoothness and ensure the internal gears are protected from wear, a comprehensive service using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil is the professional standard.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Cleaning the Left-Hand Drive

The 5001C is a mirrored version of the 5000C. All internal components are oriented for left-hand operation, which is a critical detail during teardown.

  1. Side Plate Access: Unscrew the three knurled thumb screws on the left side (the handle side). Carefully lift the side plate away.

  2. Spool Removal: Slide the spool out of the frame. Inspect the axle—this model usually features a fixed axle design. Look for any dark oxidation or debris at the points where the axle seats into the bearings.

  3. Drive Train Teardown: Remove the handle nut, handle, and star drag. Lift the side plate cover to reveal the bridge assembly. Remove the main gear and the drag stack. In this era, you will find a mechanical anti-reverse pawl; ensure you note its orientation.

  4. Deep Degreasing: Submerge all metal gears, the worm shaft, and the drive shaft in a solvent. Use a stiff brush to clear out the "valleys" of the gear teeth. Ensure all parts are bone-dry before introducing Deuthlon products.

Phase 2: Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

To modernize the feel of this 1986 classic, we use a zonal lubrication approach: Deuthlon Reel Grease for the power-train and Deuthlon Reel Oil for the speed-train.

Grease: Protection for Power and Torque

The brass main gear requires the high-load capacity and superior adhesion of Deuthlon Reel Grease.

  • Main Gear Teeth: Apply a light, uniform coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease. This grease is specifically engineered to "stay put" on the gear faces, providing a silent, cushioned feel and preventing metal-on-metal galling.

  • Pinion Gear: Coat the pinion gear extensively. This is the hardest working gear in the reel; Deuthlon Grease ensures the engagement remains smooth and quiet over thousands of casts.

  • Yoke and Sliding Plates: Apply a small amount of grease to the metal-on-metal sliding surfaces of the clutch mechanism to ensure the thumb bar returns to the "engaged" position with a crisp snap.

Oil: Velocity and Efficiency for Casting

Components that govern the cast require the ultra-low viscosity of Deuthlon Reel Oil.

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft. The 5001C features a synchronized levelwind; using oil here instead of grease is the most effective way to prevent the line guide from slowing down the spool during a cast.

  • Idler Gears: These gears bridge the spool and the levelwind system. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the gear posts. This reduces parasitic drag, significantly improving casting distance.

  • Ball Bearings: Clean the bearings thoroughly and add exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This provides the high-RPM stability necessary for maximum accuracy and freespool time.

Phase 3: Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Rebuild the Drive Stack: Place the main gear and drag washers back on the drive shaft. Ensure the mechanical anti-reverse pawl is properly seated over the ratchet gear before closing the side plate.

  2. Seat the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brake weights (usually two small plastic blocks) are pushed inward so they don't catch on the brake drum.

  3. Side Plate Attachment: Secure the thumb screws in a staggered pattern to ensure the gear bridge is perfectly level.

  4. Final Verification: Crank the handle to distribute the Deuthlon Reel Grease. The retrieve should be exceptionally quiet. Engage the freespool to confirm that the Deuthlon Reel Oil has restored the reel's ability to "whirr" like it did in 1986.

86-0 Lubrication Summary

Component Recommended Lubricant Technical Purpose
Main Drive Gear Deuthlon Reel Grease Eliminates gear grind and prevents wear
Pinion Gear Deuthlon Reel Grease Ensures silent and smooth engagement
Levelwind Worm Deuthlon Reel Oil Maximizes casting distance
Idler Gears Deuthlon Reel Oil Reduces mechanical "drag" on the spool
Spool Bearings Deuthlon Reel Oil Sustained high-RPM rotation

By maintaining your Ambassadeur 5001C (86-0) with Deuthlon products, you are protecting a piece of Swedish history and ensuring it remains a reliable, high-performance tool for decades to come.
