Technical Service & Preservation Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000CDL (Model 96-00)

The Ambassadeur 5000CDL (Model 96-00) is a prestigious "Collector Deluxe" edition manufactured in 1996. This model is a high-performance homage to the golden era, featuring 24k gold plating on the exterior hardware and high-precision stainless steel ball bearings (the "C" designation).

Unlike the 1960s versions, the 96-00 production utilized updated machining and the IAR (Instant Anti-Reverse) bearing system, making it a "hybrid" of classic aesthetics and modern mechanics. To preserve the gold finish while ensuring the high-speed internals remain protected, a clinical service using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil is the only acceptable standard.

Phase 1: Disassembly & Archival Cleaning

Because this reel features gold plating and a sensitive IAR bearing, nitrile gloves are mandatory to prevent acidic skin oils from etching the finish.

  1. Gold Protection: Use a microfiber cloth to handle the side plates. Loosen the three gold thumb screws and separate the handle-side assembly.

  2. IAR Bearing Caution: The 96-00 contains a one-way roller bearing (IAR) in the side plate. Do not submerge the side plate in harsh solvents, as this can damage the IAR housing or strip the internal lubrication.

  3. Spool & Centrifugal Brakes: Slide the spool out. This model typically uses the two-pin centrifugal brake system. Ensure the pins are clean and the brass brake drum inside the side plate is free of oil.

  4. Deep Degreasing: Submerge the main gear and pinion in a high-grade solvent. Use a soft brush to clear the gear teeth. Ensure all parts are bone-dry before introducing Deuthlon lubricants.

Phase 2: Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

Optimal performance for a CDL requires dampening mechanical noise while maximizing rotational velocity.

Grease: Protection for the "Deluxe" Drive Train

The high-precision brass gears require the film strength of Deuthlon Reel Grease to remain silent.

  • Main Gear Teeth: Apply a light, uniform coat. This grease is non-migratory, meaning it won't "seep" out of the gear bridge and onto the gold-plated surfaces.

  • Pinion Gear: Coat the pinion extensively. This ensures the engagement between the spool and the drive train is silent and prevents the "burring" of the teeth.

  • Clutch & Yoke: Apply a small amount of grease to the sliding surfaces of the yoke to ensure the thumb bar returns to the engaged position with a crisp, premium snap.

Oil: Restoring the Effortless Cast

Components that rotate at high RPMs require the ultra-low friction of Deuthlon Reel Oil.

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the gold-plated worm shaft. Since the 5000CDL features a synchronized levelwind, using oil here is the best way to prevent the line guide from slowing down the spool.

  • Idler Gears: These gears bridge the spool and the levelwind. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the gear posts. This reduces rotational inertia for longer launches.

  • Stainless Ball Bearings: Clean the bearings thoroughly and add exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This provides the stability needed for modern casting accuracy.

Phase 3: Reassembly & Calibration

  1. Rebuild the Bridge: Place the main gear and drag stack back on the drive shaft. Ensure the washers are dry and the main gear is seated perfectly flat.

  2. Seat the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brake weights are retracted so the side plate sits flush.

  3. Secure the Housing: Tighten the gold thumb screws in a staggered pattern. Finger-tight is sufficient; do not use tools, as they can mar the gold finish.

  4. Final Verification: Crank the handle to distribute the Deuthlon Reel Grease. The retrieve should be exceptionally quiet. Engage the freespool to confirm that the Deuthlon Reel Oil has significantly increased the spool’s spin duration.
