The Ambassadeur 5000C (Model 83-0) is a classic black-plate round reel manufactured in 1983. This era represents a peak in Swedish mechanical reliability, featuring the high-precision stainless steel ball bearings (the "C" designation) and a robust brass drive train.

Reels from the early 80s are often found with "grease calcification," where the original petroleum lubricants have hardened into a waxy, brown residue that hinders the movement of the levelwind and dampens casting distance. To restore this 1983 classic to its factory-smooth potential, a full service using Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil is recommended.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Vintage Cleaning

The 83-0 model uses the classic 3-screw side plate architecture. Because this reel was built with the tighter tolerances of the "C" series, removing old friction-causing residue is paramount.

1. Chassis Opening: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the handle-side plate and lift the assembly away. Remove the spool.

2. Spool and Centrifugal Brakes: Inspect the two-pin centrifugal brake system. Ensure the weights are not "stuck" due to oil migration. Wipe the brass brake drum inside the side plate with a dry cloth—it must be bone-dry for consistent braking.

3. Drive Train Teardown: Remove the handle, star drag, and the side plate bridge screws. Lift out the main gear and the drag stack. In 1983, these models often featured fiber drag washers; check for brittleness.

4. Deep Degreasing: Submerge the brass main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a solvent. Use a stiff brush to clear out 40+ years of debris from the gear teeth. Dry every part thoroughly before re-lubricating.

Phase 2: Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

• Anti-Reverse Dog: Apply a small dab of grease to the anti-reverse pawl. This prevents the sharp metallic "clack" and protects the ratchet gear teeth from wear.

Oil: Restoring the "Swedish Whirr"

The 5000C features a synchronized levelwind that robs distance if not lubricated with a low-friction oil like Deuthlon Reel Oil.

• Levelwind Worm Gear: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft. This prevents the line guide from slowing down the spool during a cast.

• Idler Gears / Cog Wheels: These plastic gears bridge the spool and the levelwind. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the gear posts to reduce rotational inertia.

• Stainless Ball Bearings: Clean the bearings thoroughly and add exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This provides the high-RPM stability necessary for accuracy and maximum distance.

Phase 3: Reassembly and Performance Verification

1. Rebuild the Drive Stack: Place the main gear and drag washers back on the drive shaft. Ensure the mechanical anti-reverse dog is properly seated over the ratchet gear before closing the side plate.

2. Seat the Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brake weights are retracted so the side plate sits perfectly flush.

3. Mechanical Tension: Tighten the thumb screws in a cross-pattern. Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play of the spool just disappears.

4. Final Verification: Crank the handle to distribute the grease. The retrieve should feel solid and silent. Engage the freespool to confirm the Deuthlon Reel Oil has restored the spool’s ability to spin effortlessly.
