Master Service Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000A Restoration

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000A is a legendary casting reel, revered by collectors and anglers alike for its distinct red finish and "A" designation, which typically indicates a high-capacity spool or specific arbor configuration. Restoring this vintage powerhouse requires a meticulous approach to lubrication to maintain its signature smooth "click" and effortless casting.

To achieve professional-grade results, we recommend utilizing Deuthlon Reel Power Oil and Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease. These lubricants are engineered with high-load additives that are particularly effective on the vintage metallurgy found in 1970s and 80s Swedish reels.

Phase 1: Deep Cleaning the Internals

Before applying new lubricants, the 5000A must be stripped of all "vintage" grease, which often thickens into a wax-like substance over decades. Remove the side plates and extract the drive train.

Soak the gears, levelwind components, and the frame in a specialized cleaner. Ensure the drag washers—usually leather or early fiber in the 5000A—are wiped clean and dry. If the washers are saturated with old oil, they may require replacement to regain a smooth drag curve.

Phase 2: Gear Train Lubrication

The longevity of the Ambassadeur 5000A relies on the interface between the drive gear and the pinion.

  • Main Gear and Pinion: Apply Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the teeth of the main gear. Use a precision brush to paint the grease onto the teeth; the goal is a thin, uniform coating. Do not "pack" the gear box, as excess grease creates internal drag. This high-viscosity grease provides a cushioning effect that eliminates the "grindy" feel common in older reels.

Phase 3: Optimizing the Levelwind and Idler System

The levelwind system is often the most neglected part of the 5000A. Because this reel features a non-disengaging levelwind (it moves during the cast), reducing friction here is vital for distance.

  • Worm Shaft and Pawl: Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the worm shaft. Unlike grease, which can trap debris and slow down the oscillation, the Power Oil allows the pawl to glide effortlessly.

  • Idler Gears: These gears transfer power to the levelwind. Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the idler gear posts. This ensures the gears spin with zero resistance, preventing the "vibration" often felt during a heavy retrieve.

Phase 4: Spool Shaft and Bearing Maintenance

The 5000A relies on a fixed-shaft design where the spool rotates on the spindle. Friction at these contact points will kill your casting momentum.

  • Spindle and Bushings: Clean the spool shaft until it shines. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to each end of the shaft where it seats into the side plate bushings. This synthetic oil maintains its viscosity across temperature plateaus, ensuring your first cast of the morning is as long as your last.

Final Assembly and Tuning

Reassemble the side plates, ensuring the brake blocks stay on their pins. Once the handle is secured, back off the cast control knob and engage the free spool.

With Deuthlon lubricants, the 5000A should operate with a whisper-quiet mechanical action. The combination of grease on the heavy-wear gears and high-speed oil on the moving oscillation parts creates a balanced performance profile that exceeds the reel's original factory specifications. Regular application of these specialized lubricants will protect the 5000A from internal oxidation and mechanical fatigue for years to come.
