Technical Service Protocol: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 Sprint (Foot Number 89-0)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 Sprint, specifically the 89-0 production run, is the polar opposite of the Winch series. Designed for high-speed techniques like burning spinnerbaits or working topwater plugs, the Sprint features a 6.3:1 gear ratio—a blistering speed for a round reel in the late 1980s. Because the internal gears spin at a much higher frequency, heat dissipation and friction reduction are the primary goals of this service.
To optimize this high-speed machine, we recommend Deuthlon Reel Power Oil for the rapid-oscillation components and Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease for the high-speed gear mesh. These lubricants are designed to stay stable at high RPMs without "slinging" off the moving parts.
Phase 1: Internal Stripping and Degreasing
Open the 5000 Sprint by removing the three thumb screws on the drive side plate. The 89-0 Sprint contains a larger main gear than standard models to achieve its high ratio. Remove the spool and the levelwind assembly.
Use a high-quality degreaser to remove all existing lubricants. High-speed reels often suffer from "burnt" grease—old lubricant that has thinned out and hardened due to the heat of high-speed retrieves. Ensure the teeth of the high-speed brass main gear are perfectly clean. Inspect the centrifugal brake drum; any oil or grease on the drum surface will cause "over-braking" and ruin the Sprint's casting performance.
Phase 2: High-Speed Gear Lubrication
The main gear in a Sprint model travels much faster than a standard 5000. This requires a grease that can maintain a thin, consistent film without creating "fluid drag" that makes the handle feel heavy.
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a very light, uniform coating of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the main gear teeth. For high-speed models, "less is more." You want to fill the pores of the metal and provide a slick interface without excess buildup. Treat the pinion gear similarly. This PTFE-fortified grease ensures that even at maximum retrieve speeds, the gear mesh remains cool and silent.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System Optimization
In a high-speed reel, the levelwind moves across the spool much faster during the retrieve. This increased velocity requires a low-viscosity lubricant to prevent the oscillation system from "eating" the reel's power.
-
Worm Shaft and Pawl: Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the worm shaft. Grease should never be used here on a Sprint model, as the high-speed movement will cause grease to "clump" at the ends of the shaft.
-
Idler Gears: These gears are under significant speed-stress in the 6.3:1 system. Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the idler gear posts. This allows the gears to spin freely, ensuring the high-speed retrieve feels effortless and doesn't vibrate through the frame.
Phase 4: Spool Spindle and High-Speed Bearings
The 5000 Sprint relies on its ability to transition from a high-speed cast to a high-speed retrieve. Friction on the spool shaft is the enemy of both.
-
Spool Shaft: Polish the ends of the spool shaft and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to each side.
-
Bushings/Bearings: If your 89-0 Sprint is equipped with ball bearings, flush them thoroughly and add one drop of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil. This ultra-light synthetic oil provides the low startup inertia needed for the Sprint to live up to its name.
Final Reassembly and Testing
Reassemble the side plates and secure the handle. Because the Sprint has a higher gear ratio, it is more sensitive to "dry" gears. Rotate the handle rapidly; you should feel a smooth, liquid-like resistance.
By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease on the high-speed drive and Deuthlon Reel Power Oil on the levelwind and idler gears, you ensure that your 1989 Ambassadeur 5000 Sprint remains a top-tier performer. This specific lubrication strategy prevents the premature wear of the high-ratio teeth while maximizing the mechanical efficiency of the reel's fast-moving parts.
