Essential Service Manual: Vintage Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 & 6000 (Pre-1975 Models)
Maintaining a Pre-1975 Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 or 6000 series reel is an exercise in preserving history. These "four-screw" and "three-screw" classics are the bedrock of the Swedish round reel legacy. Because these older models feature coarser gear cuts and specific bronze bushing tolerances, the choice of lubricant is the difference between a reel that feels "clunky" and one that operates with buttery precision.
To achieve the best results, we recommend Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease for load-bearing components and Deuthlon Reel Power Oil for all high-oscillation parts. These modern synthetics fill the microscopic imperfections found in vintage metals, providing a smoother interface than original 1970s oils.
Step 1: Breakdown and Component Inspection
Open the reel by removing the side plate screws. For Pre-1975 models, you will often find a fixed-spindle system or early ball bearings. Remove the spool and the drive train.
Clean all parts thoroughly in a degreasing solution. Pay close attention to the "click wheel" and the drag pressure plate. Vintage Ambassadeurs often have accumulated carbon and old grease in the gear teeth that must be removed with a fine brush to ensure the new Deuthlon lubricants can bond directly to the metal surfaces.
Step 2: Lubricating the Drive System
The 5000 and 6000 series from this era utilize heavy brass main gears. These require a high-tack lubricant that won't "shed" under the pressure of a large fish.
-
Main Gear and Pinion Gear: Apply Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the main gear. Use a small applicator to place grease into the "valleys" of every third tooth; as you turn the handle later, the grease will distribute perfectly. Coat the pinion gear—the small gear that slides on the spool shaft—with a thin film of the same grease. This ensures the engagement of the gear train is soft and silent, protecting the vintage brass from rounding off.
Step 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear Optimization
On Pre-1975 Ambassadeurs, the levelwind is always engaged. This creates significant mechanical drag during the cast. Using grease here is a common mistake that ruins performance.
-
Levelwind Worm Shaft: Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the length of the worm gear. This high-speed oil reduces the energy required for the line guide to move back and forth, effectively increasing your casting distance.
-
Idler Gears: These are the gears that connect the spool to the levelwind. Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the idler gear posts. The oil allows these gears to spin with minimal resistance, which is crucial for these older models that lack the efficiency of modern bearing-supported idlers.
Step 4: Spool Support and Friction Points
The performance of a 5000 or 6000 model is dictated by the friction at the spool ends.
-
Spool Shaft and Bushings: Clean the ends of the spool shaft until they are mirror-bright. Apply a single drop of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the bronze bushings in the side plates. If your reel is a specialized model with early bearings, flush them with alcohol and apply one drop of the Power Oil. This provides a low-viscosity film that allows the heavy spool to start spinning with very little "startup" inertia.
Reassembly and Final Calibration
Slide the spool back into the frame and attach the side plates. Tighten the screws in a cross-pattern to ensure even pressure.
By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease on the main drive and Deuthlon Reel Power Oil on the levelwind and idler gears, you are giving this Pre-1975 classic a modern performance profile. The result is a vintage reel that retains its soul but operates with the smoothness and reliability of a contemporary precision tool. Regular maintenance with these specific lubricants will ensure your Ambassadeur remains a functional masterpiece for another fifty years.
