Professional Maintenance Protocol: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 (Foot Number 09 02)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000, specifically those marked with the 09 02 foot number, represents a refined era of the classic 5000-series round reel. This model is built for versatility, often serving as a workhorse for everything from river salmon to heavy bass fishing. To keep the 09 02 performing with its signature Swedish smoothness, a precise lubrication strategy is required that balances protection with mechanical speed.
For this overhaul, we recommend Deuthlon Reel Power Oil and Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease. These high-performance synthetics are designed to reduce startup inertia and provide a high-load barrier that standard mineral oils cannot replicate.
Phase 1: Disassembly and Cleaning
Start by removing the handle nut, handle, and star drag. Loosen the three knurled thumb screws to remove the drive-side plate. Extract the spool and the levelwind components.
The 09 02 model often features a mix of brass and stainless steel internals. Use a high-quality degreaser to strip away all old, oxidized grease from the main gear teeth and the interior of the side plates. Ensure the worm shaft is free of any trapped grit or old oil. Dry all parts thoroughly; any residual cleaner can break down the new lubricants.
Phase 2: Drive System Lubrication
The main gear and pinion are the primary points of friction during the retrieve. These components bear the brunt of the pressure when fighting fish.
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a uniform coating of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the teeth of the brass main gear. This grease is formulated to stay on the gear faces even under high torque, providing a silent and cushioned retrieve. Lightly brush the pinion gear and the clutch yoke with the same grease to ensure smooth engagement when switching from free-spool to retrieve.
Phase 3: High-Speed Levelwind and Idler Gears
The Ambassadeur 5000 features a synchronized levelwind that tracks back and forth during the cast. Because this system is always moving, using a heavy grease here will significantly shorten your casting distance.
-
Worm Shaft: Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil directly to the grooves of the worm shaft. This allows the line guide to oscillate rapidly with minimal friction.
-
Idler Gears: These plastic and metal gears connect the spool to the levelwind mechanism. Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the idler gear posts. The oil’s low viscosity ensures that the energy of the spinning spool is not wasted on the levelwind's movement, resulting in much longer, more effortless casts.
Phase 4: Spool Support and Friction Points
Consistency in casting is achieved by maintaining the spool shaft ends and the tension system.
-
Spool Shaft: Clean the stainless steel spool spindle until it is bright. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to each end of the shaft.
-
Tension Shims: Apply a tiny amount of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the copper tension shims inside the cast control caps. This prevents the shaft from wearing into the shim and ensures a smooth, consistent spool speed throughout the cast.
Final Reassembly and Calibration
Slide the spool back into the frame and reattach the side plate. Once the handle is secured, adjust the cast control knob until there is a minute amount of lateral play in the spool.
By applying Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the heavy-wear gears and Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the fast-moving levelwind and idler gears, you have optimized the 09 02 for maximum efficiency. This maintenance routine ensures that your Ambassadeur 5000 remains a silent, powerful, and long-casting tool for many seasons to come.
