Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4601CL3 (10-00)

The Ambassadeur 4601CL3 is a classic left-handed round reel known for its durability and smooth casting. To maintain its performance, a full teardown and lubrication service is recommended annually or after heavy use. For the highest level of protection and performance, this guide recommends using Deuthlon Reel Oil and Deuthlon Reel Grease.

Tools and Preparation

Before beginning, ensure you have a clean, light-colored workspace to track small parts. You will need a flat-head screwdriver, a 10mm wrench, and a pair of tweezers.

  1. De-spool the line or secure it with tape to prevent tangles.

  2. Back off the drag by turning the star wheel counter-clockwise to relieve pressure on the washers.

Phase 1: Exterior Disassembly

  1. Handle Assembly: Remove the screw securing the handle nut cap. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut. Lift off the handle, the spring washer (curved washer), and the star drag wheel.

  2. Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three thumb screws on the right side plate (palm side). Pull the side plate away from the frame. The spool can now be slid out of the frame.

Phase 2: The Drive Train and Gear Set

  1. Accessing the Gear Box: Remove the screws securing the left side plate (handle side) to the frame. Gently lift the side plate to reveal the main gear assembly.

  2. Main and Pinion Gear Service: * Slide the Main Gear and the drag washer stack off the drive shaft.

    • Remove the Pinion Gear and the yoke.

    • Lubrication: Clean away old, oxidized grease with a degreaser. Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This high-viscosity lubricant reduces friction under load and prevents corrosion.

Phase 3: The Levelwind and Idler System

  1. Levelwind Disassembly: Unscrew the pawl cap located underneath the levelwind tube and remove the small metal pawl. Slide the worm shaft out of the frame.

  2. Idler Gear: Locate the nylon idler gear that connects the drive train to the levelwind system.

  3. Lubrication: * Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft. Using oil here instead of grease ensures a fast, effortless travel of the line guide during casting.

    • Apply a drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Idler Gear posts. This ensures the gears spin freely without the drag associated with heavier greases.

Phase 4: Spool Bearings and Spindle

  1. Bearing Maintenance: Locate the bearings on the spool shaft and inside the side plates.

  2. Lubrication: Clean the bearings of any debris. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing. Do not over-oil, as this can actually slow down the rotation of the spool.

Phase 5: Reassembly

  1. Seat the Pinion: Place the pinion gear back into the yoke and ensure it engages with the kick lever.

  2. Replace the Main Gear: Slide the drag stack and main gear back onto the drive shaft. Ensure the washers are seated in the correct "ear" slots.

  3. Close the Frame: Reattach the side plate and tighten the screws.

  4. Levelwind Timing: Reinstall the worm shaft and pawl. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the groove of the worm shaft before tightening the cap.

  5. Final Components: Replace the spool, side plate, star drag, spring washer, and handle. Tighten the handle nut and secure the locking cap.

Testing and Calibration

Engage the thumb bar to ensure the spool freespool functions correctly. Turn the handle to engage the gears; the movement should be silent and smooth. Adjust the mechanical tension knob until the spool has a minute amount of side-to-side play for optimal casting distance. By using Deuthlon lubricants, you have ensured the 4601CL3 remains protected against wear and environmental contaminants.
