Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4601C4 Winch (10-00)
The Ambassadeur 4601C4 Winch is a specialized low-gear ratio version of the classic 4600 series, designed for high-torque retrieves with deep-diving crankbaits. As a left-hand model, the "01" designation features a thumb-bar release and a four-bearing system. To preserve the mechanical advantage of the Winch gearing, proper lubrication with Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil is essential.
Phase 1: Disassembly and Internal Access
-
Handle and Star Drag: Remove the handle nut cap screw and the 10mm handle nut. Pull the handle off the drive shaft. Remove the star drag wheel and the curved spring washers (noting their orientation for reassembly).
-
Side Plate Removal: Unscrew the three thumb screws on the right side plate. Remove the side plate and slide the spool out of the frame.
-
Gear Box Entry: Remove the two or three screws (depending on exact housing) securing the left side plate to the frame. Gently pull the side plate assembly away to expose the main gear, pinion, and kick lever mechanism.
Phase 2: Gear Train Maintenance
The "Winch" model utilizes a specific gear pitch to achieve its high-torque ratio. Any debris in these teeth will be felt immediately through the handle.
-
Cleaning: Use a soft brush and a degreaser to remove old, contaminated grease from the brass main gear and the stainless steel pinion gear.
-
Grease Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Grease to the Main Gear and Pinion Gear. Use a small brush to ensure the grease is applied to the teeth rather than the flat faces of the gear. This grease provides a high-load film that protects the teeth during high-resistance retrieves.
-
Drag Stack: Inspect the carbon matrix washers. Ensure they are free of grit. A microscopic film of Deuthlon grease can be applied to the metal washers to ensure a "stutter-free" drag.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear System
Because the 4601C4 Winch is often used for constant casting and retrieving, the levelwind system is a high-wear area.
-
Worm Shaft: Locate the worm shaft (the spiral-grooved bar) behind the line guide. Clean any grass or grit from the grooves.
-
Idler Gear: Locate the white nylon idler gear that transfers power from the spool to the levelwind.
-
Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil here instead of grease is critical; grease can become sluggish in cold weather or trap debris, whereas Deuthlon oil maintains a low-friction barrier that allows the line guide to track smoothly across the spool.
Phase 4: Bearings and Spindle
-
Spool Bearings: This model features high-quality stainless steel bearings. Remove them from their housings (one in the side plate, one on the spool shaft).
-
Lubrication: Add one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing. This oil is formulated to stay on the race longer than standard oils while providing maximum RPMs during the cast.
-
Brake Weights: Inspect the centrifugal brake weights on the spool. Ensure the brake drum (the metal ring in the side plate) is clean and dry.
Phase 5: Reassembly
-
Seat the Gear Train: Ensure the pinion gear is properly nested in the yoke and that the yoke springs are seated. Slide the main gear assembly back onto the drive shaft.
-
Join Side Plates: Align the side plate with the frame and tighten the screws.
-
Install Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame, ensuring the spindle engages with the pinion gear.
-
Final Components: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, and handle. Tighten the 10mm nut and replace the locking cap.
Performance Verification
Engage the thumb bar and spin the spool; it should rotate freely without vibration. Engage the handle to ensure the "Winch" gearing feels smooth and powerful. The combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease on the heavy-duty gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the fast-moving levelwind components ensures your 4601C4 Winch will handle high-resistance lures with ease for seasons to come.
