Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4601C3 (15 01)

The Ambassadeur 4601C3 (15 01) is a modern iteration of the classic left-hand drive round reel. Featuring the updated side plate design and the 3-bearing system, this model is a workhorse for freshwater and light saltwater applications. Regular maintenance ensures the instant anti-reverse remains crisp and the casting distance stays maximized. To achieve a professional-grade finish, this guide utilizes Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.

Phase 1: Exterior Teardown

  1. Handle Components: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking cap. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut. Pull the handle arm off the drive shaft.

  2. Star Drag and Washers: Unscrew the star drag wheel. Beneath it, you will find the tension washers (Belleville washers). Note that they are usually oriented "back-to-back" ( ) to create spring tension.

  3. Spool Removal: Loosen the three captive thumb screws on the right side plate. Pull the side plate away and slide the spool out of the frame.

Phase 2: Internal Gear Box Service

The "15 01" model features a robust drive train that requires high-performance lubrication to handle the torque of larger fish.

  1. Opening the Gear Side: Remove the screws securing the left side plate to the frame pillars. Carefully lift the side plate to reveal the drive shaft, main gear, and pinion assembly.

  2. Cleaning the Drive Train: Use a soft brush and a degreaser to strip away old, discolored lubricant from the gear teeth.

  3. Grease Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Grease to the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease is formulated to withstand high pressure and provides a smooth, "buttery" feel during the retrieve. Ensure every tooth is coated, but avoid excessive buildup that can migrate into the drag washers.

  4. Drag System: Ensure the drag washers are clean. If they are carbon fiber, a micro-layer of Deuthlon grease can be applied to the metal interface to prevent "jerkiness" under load.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System

In the 4601C3, the levelwind is non-disengaging, meaning it moves during the cast. Reducing friction here is the most effective way to increase casting distance.

  1. Worm Shaft Removal: Remove the pawl cap and pawl from the line guide. Slide the worm shaft out of the frame shroud.

  2. Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the nylon idler gear (usually white or translucent) that drives the levelwind. Check for debris trapped between the teeth.

  3. Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil instead of grease on these parts is critical for the C3 series; it allows the levelwind to oscillate with minimal drag, ensuring the spool spins faster and longer during the cast.

Phase 4: Bearings and Spool Spindle

  1. Spool Bearings: The 4601C3 features two high-speed stainless steel spool bearings. One is located inside the mechanical tension knob, and the other is in the opposite side plate.

  2. Lubrication: Clean the bearings thoroughly. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing. This oil provides superior film strength at high RPMs.

  3. Brake Drum: Wipe the inner copper brake ring in the side plate with a dry cloth. Keep this surface free of oil and grease to ensure the centrifugal brake weights function consistently.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Set the Gears: Reinstall the pinion gear and yoke, ensuring the springs are properly seated. Slide the main gear and drag stack back onto the drive shaft.

  2. Close the Plate: Align the side plate with the frame and tighten the screws.

  3. Insert Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame. Attach the right side plate and tighten the thumb screws.

  4. Final Hardware: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, and handle. Tighten the 10mm nut and replace the locking cap.

Performance Verification

Check the thumb-bar engagement to ensure the clutch is crisp. Spin the spool to verify the levelwind is tracking smoothly across the frame. By using Deuthlon Reel Grease on the heavy-duty gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler components, you have optimized your 4601C3 for maximum efficiency and long-term protection against the elements.
