Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4601C3 (15-00)
The Ambassadeur 4601C3 (15-00) is a refined, left-hand drive round reel known for its versatility and the classic "three-bearing" system. This specific revision (15-00) features the instant anti-reverse bearing and the synchronized levelwind system. To keep this reel operating with maximum efficiency, it requires high-performance lubrication. We recommend using Deuthlon Reel Grease for heavy-load components and Deuthlon Reel Oil for high-speed parts.
Phase 1: Exterior Disassembly
-
Handle Components: Remove the handle nut locking screw and the 10mm handle nut. Pull the handle arm off the drive shaft. Remove the star drag wheel by turning it counter-clockwise.
-
Spring Washers: Carefully remove the two curved Belleville spring washers. Note that they are usually positioned "back-to-back" ( ) to create the necessary spring tension for the drag system.
-
Spool Access: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate. Pull the side plate away from the frame and slide the spool out.
Phase 2: Internal Gear Box Service
The gear box houses the drive mechanism. On the 15-00 model, the precision of the gear mesh is what provides that signature smooth retrieve.
-
Opening the Housing: Remove the screws securing the left side plate (handle side) to the frame pillars. Gently lift the side plate to reveal the main drive gear and the pinion assembly.
-
Cleaning: Use a specialized reel cleaner or isopropyl alcohol to strip away old, oxidized grease from the gear teeth.
-
Grease Application: Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the Main Gear teeth and the Pinion Gear. This grease is engineered to reduce friction under heavy cranking pressure and provides excellent water resistance to prevent corrosion between the brass and steel surfaces.
-
Clutch Mechanism: Apply a tiny dab of grease to the pinion yoke and the kick lever where they make contact with the frame to ensure a smooth thumb-bar transition.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear System
Because the levelwind on the C3 series is synchronized (it moves during the cast), any friction in this system will significantly decrease your casting distance.
-
Worm Shaft Maintenance: Unscrew the pawl cap located on the bottom of the line guide. Remove the metal pawl. Slide the worm shaft out of its shroud. Clean the "double-helix" grooves of any trapped grit or salt.
-
Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the white nylon idler gear on the frame that links the spool to the levelwind system.
-
Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil here instead of grease is essential; oil has a lower viscosity, allowing the levelwind to oscillate rapidly during the cast without creating the mechanical "drag" that occurs with heavier greases.
Phase 4: Bearings and Spool Spindle
-
Spool Bearings: The 4601C3 features two high-speed stainless steel bearings. One is located in the side plate tension knob and the other is usually in the opposite side plate.
-
Lubrication: Clean the bearings thoroughly. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This provides the necessary lubrication for high-RPM casting while maintaining maximum free-spool time.
-
Anti-Reverse Bearing: Inspect the one-way roller bearing in the side plate. If the handle feels sticky or slips, clean the bearing and apply a very light film of oil. Never use grease here, as it will cause the rollers to fail.
Phase 5: Reassembly and Final Check
-
Drive Train: Reseat the pinion gear into the yoke. Slide the main gear and the drag washer stack back onto the drive shaft.
-
Frame Assembly: Align the left side plate with the frame and tighten the screws.
-
Spool and Side Plate: Insert the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brake weights are pushed inward. Reattach the right side plate and tighten the thumb screws.
-
Handle Assembly: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, handle, and 10mm nut. Secure the locking cap.
Performance Verification
Depress the thumb bar to ensure the reel enters free-spool mode effortlessly. Spin the spool; the levelwind should track back and forth smoothly across the frame. Turn the handle to engage the gears. By using Deuthlon Reel Grease on the primary gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler gears, you have optimized the 4601C3 (15-00) for peak performance and longevity.
