Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4601C3 (06-02)

The Ambassadeur 4601C3 (06-02) is a precision-engineered, left-hand retrieve round reel. This specific model revision is prized for its high-quality Swedish construction and the "01" left-hand configuration. To maintain the smooth casting and powerful retrieve this reel is known for, a full service with professional lubricants is required. For this procedure, we recommend using Deuthlon Reel Grease for heavy-duty components and Deuthlon Reel Oil for high-speed parts.

Phase 1: Exterior Disassembly

  1. Handle and Star Drag: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking cap and unscrew the 10mm handle nut. Pull the handle arm off the drive shaft. Remove the star drag wheel by turning it counter-clockwise.

  2. Spring Washers: Take note of the two curved Belleville spring washers beneath the star drag. They must be reinstalled in an "opposing" fashion ( ) to provide the correct spring tension for the drag system.

  3. Spool Removal: Loosen the three knurled captive screws on the right side plate. Pull the side plate away from the frame and slide the spool out.

Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Service

The drive train is the heart of the reel’s mechanical power. Proper grease application here prevents gear chatter and wear under the pressure of a heavy fish.

  1. Opening the Gear Side: Remove the screws securing the left side plate (handle side) to the frame pillars. Gently lift the side plate to reveal the main drive gear and the pinion assembly.

  2. Cleaning: Use a soft brush and a degreaser to strip away old, contaminated grease from the gear teeth and the drive shaft.

  3. Grease Application: Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the Main Gear teeth and the Pinion Gear. This grease is specifically formulated to adhere to metal surfaces under high torque, providing a smooth, consistent feel while preventing corrosion.

  4. Clutch Mechanism: Apply a tiny dab of grease to the pinion yoke and the kick lever where they make contact with the frame to ensure a smooth thumb-bar transition.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear System

Because the levelwind on the C3 series is synchronized (it remains engaged and moves during the cast), reducing friction in this area is the most effective way to increase your casting distance.

  1. Worm Shaft Maintenance: Unscrew the pawl cap located on the bottom of the line guide. Remove the metal pawl. Slide the worm shaft out of its shroud. Clean the "double-helix" grooves of any trapped grit or salt.

  2. Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the white nylon idler gear on the frame that links the spool to the levelwind system. Ensure the teeth are clean and free of debris.

  3. Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil here instead of grease is essential; oil has a lower viscosity, allowing the levelwind to oscillate rapidly during the cast without creating the mechanical "drag" that occurs with heavier greases.

Phase 4: Bearings and Spool Spindle

  1. Spool Bearings: The 4601C3 features two high-speed stainless steel bearings. One is located in the side plate tension knob and the other is usually in the opposite side plate.

  2. Lubrication: Clean the bearings thoroughly with a degreaser and let them dry. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing race. This provides the necessary lubrication for high-RPM casting while maintaining maximum free-spool time.

  3. Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR) Bearing: Inspect the one-way roller bearing located in the side plate. If the handle has back-play, clean the bearing and apply a very light film of oil. Never use grease here, as it will cause the rollers to stick and the anti-reverse to fail.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Drive Train: Reseat the pinion gear into the yoke. Slide the main gear and the drag washer stack back onto the drive shaft.

  2. Frame Assembly: Align the left side plate with the frame and tighten the screws.

  3. Spool and Side Plate: Insert the spool back into the frame. Ensure the centrifugal brake weights are pushed inward. Reattach the right side plate and tighten the thumb screws.

  4. Handle Assembly: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, handle, and 10mm nut. Secure the locking cap with the screw.

Performance Verification

Depress the thumb bar to ensure the reel enters free-spool mode effortlessly. Spin the spool by hand; the levelwind should track back and forth smoothly across the frame without any hesitation. Turn the handle to engage the gears and test the drag. By using Deuthlon Reel Grease on the primary gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler gears, you have optimized your 4601C3 (06-02) for peak performance and longevity.
