Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4601C3 (02 17 01)

The Ambassadeur 4601C3 (02 17 01) is a classic left-handed round reel that exemplifies the "Swedish Made" tradition of reliability. This specific revision features the standard 5.3:1 gear ratio and the 3-bearing system, including the instant anti-reverse bearing. To ensure this reel remains a mainstay in your arsenal, a systematic teardown and lubrication with Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil is recommended.

Phase 1: Exterior Component Removal

  1. Handle and Star Drag: Remove the screw for the handle nut cover and the 10mm handle nut. Remove the handle and the star drag wheel. Note the orientation of the two curved Belleville washers; they must be placed back-to-back to maintain proper drag pressure.

  2. Side Plate Access: Loosen the three large thumb screws on the right side plate. Pull the plate away to expose the spool. Slide the spool out of the frame.

  3. Frame Separation: Remove the screws securing the left side plate (handle side) to the frame. Gently separate the housing to reveal the internal drive mechanism and the clutch assembly.

Phase 2: Drive Train Maintenance

The drive train consists of the main gear, pinion gear, and drag stack. These parts handle the mechanical stress of the retrieve.

  1. Degreasing: Clean the brass Main Gear and the stainless steel Pinion Gear using a degreaser. Use a brush to remove old grease trapped in the gear teeth.

  2. Grease Application: Apply a thin, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This specialized grease provides high-load protection and prevents the "gritty" feel that occurs as gears wear over time.

  3. Clutch Mechanism: Apply a small amount of grease to the pinion yoke and the kick lever slider. This ensures the thumb bar engages and disengages with a crisp, tactile click.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System

The levelwind system on the 4601C3 is synchronized, meaning it moves during the cast. Reducing friction here is the most effective way to increase casting distance.

  1. Worm Shaft Cleaning: Remove the pawl cap from the bottom of the line guide and pull out the pawl. Slide the worm shaft out. Clean the "double-helix" grooves of any dirt or old lubricant.

  2. Idler Gear: Locate the nylon idler gear that transfers motion from the spool to the levelwind. Ensure it is free of grit.

  3. Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil instead of grease on these components is vital; grease creates "windage" or drag that slows the spool during a cast. Deuthlon oil provides a low-friction barrier that allows the line guide to travel effortlessly across the frame.

Phase 4: Bearings and Spool Spindle

  1. Spool Bearings: The 02 17 01 model features two spool bearings. Remove them from the side plate and the tension knob.

  2. Lubrication: Clean the bearings and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. Do not over-lubricate, as excess oil can leak into the brake drum.

  3. Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR) Bearing: This bearing is located inside the handle-side plate. If the reel is slipping, clean the IAR bearing with alcohol and apply a very light film of oil. Never use grease in the IAR bearing, as it will cause the rollers to stick and the anti-reverse to fail.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Function Check

  1. Install Gears: Place the pinion gear and yoke back into position. Slide the main gear and drag washers onto the drive shaft.

  2. Close the Frame: Align the side plate with the frame and tighten the screws.

  3. Seat the Spool: Slide the spool into the frame, ensuring the spindle engages the pinion gear. Reattach the right side plate and tighten the thumb screws.

  4. Final Components: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, and handle. Tighten the 10mm nut and replace the locking cap.

Performance Verification

Depress the thumb bar to ensure the spool enters free-spool mode. Spin the spool; the levelwind should track back and forth smoothly. Turn the handle to verify the gears engage instantly without slipping. By using Deuthlon Reel Grease on the heavy gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler gears, you have optimized your Ambassadeur 4601C3 for maximum longevity and performance.
