Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4601AB (08-00)
The Ambassadeur 4601AB is a unique left-hand retrieve model featuring the "Anti-Backlash" (AB) system. This system incorporates a moving line carriage that puts tension on the line to prevent professional overruns (birds-nests), making it a distinct variant of the classic 4600 series. To maintain the sensitivity of the AB mechanism while ensuring smooth cranking, high-quality lubrication is paramount. For this service, we recommend Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.
Phase 1: Disassembly and AB System Inspection
-
Handle Removal: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking cap. Use a 10mm wrench to remove the handle nut, then pull off the handle, spring washer, and star drag wheel.
-
Accessing the Spool: Loosen the three thumb screws on the right side plate. Remove the plate and slide the spool out.
-
AB Mechanism: Note the specific linkage on the frame that connects to the thumb bar. This "Anti-Backlash" system relies on clean, unobstructed movement. Ensure the pivot points are free of salt or grit.
-
Gear Side Plate: Remove the internal screws securing the left side plate to the frame pillars to access the drive train.
Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Maintenance
The 4601AB uses a standard brass-on-steel gear set. Because the AB system adds slight mechanical complexity, the gears must be kept in perfect condition to avoid a "heavy" retrieve.
-
Cleaning: Degrease the Main Gear and Pinion Gear thoroughly. Use a brush to ensure no old lubricant remains in the gear teeth.
-
Grease Application: Apply a consistent layer of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease is specifically designed to stay on the teeth under load, providing a quiet and smooth retrieve even when the Anti-Backlash system is actively engaged.
-
Clutch Linkage: Apply a small amount of grease to the pinion yoke and the slider rails for the thumb bar.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear System
The levelwind on the 4601AB is synchronized with the spool. Any friction in this system will interfere with the Anti-Backlash sensors.
-
Worm Shaft Maintenance: Unscrew the pawl cap from the bottom of the line guide and remove the pawl. Slide the worm shaft out. Clean the grooves and the shroud.
-
Idler Gear: Locate the nylon idler gear on the frame. This gear is the bridge between the spool's energy and the levelwind's movement.
-
Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil here is critical; grease is too viscous for the levelwind and idler components and would cause the Anti-Backlash system to trigger prematurely or perform sluggishly. The light viscosity of Deuthlon oil ensures the line guide tracks perfectly with the line.
Phase 4: Bearings and Spool Spindle
-
Bearing Service: Locate the spool bearings (one in the side plate and one in the tension knob).
-
Lubrication: Clean the bearings of any debris. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing. This allows for the high-speed rotation required for effective casting while maintaining enough film strength to protect the races.
-
IAR Bearing: Inspect the Instant Anti-Reverse bearing in the handle side plate. If the reel has back-slap, clean with a solvent and apply a very thin film of oil. Never use grease here.
Phase 5: Reassembly and Calibration
-
Install Gears: Seat the pinion gear in the yoke and slide the main gear/drag stack onto the drive shaft.
-
Close the Frame: Reattach the left side plate and tighten the screws.
-
Spool and AB Setup: Insert the spool. Reattach the right side plate.
-
Final Components: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, handle, and nut.
Performance Verification
Test the thumb bar to ensure the spool releases correctly. With the Anti-Backlash system engaged, the line guide should feel responsive. Turn the handle to verify the gears engage smoothly. By using Deuthlon Reel Grease on the heavy gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler gears, you have ensured the 4601AB (08-00) remains a smooth and reliable tool for backlash-free fishing.
