Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 4600C5 Mag X (16 00)
The Ambassadeur 4600C5 Mag X is a high-performance, right-hand retrieve round reel that combines a five-bearing system with an adjustable magnetic braking system (Mag X). This model is designed for extreme casting control and smoothness. Maintaining the 4600C5 requires a balance of heavy-duty protection for its high-speed gears and ultra-low friction for its magnetic-assist spool. To achieve this, we recommend Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil.
Phase 1: Disassembly and Magnetic System Care
-
Handle and Star Drag: Remove the screw from the handle nut locking cap and unscrew the 10mm handle nut. Remove the handle, spring washer, and star drag wheel. Note the orientation of the Belleville washers for reassembly.
-
Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate (handle side). Remove the plate and slide the spool out of the frame.
-
Mag X Inspection: On the left side plate (non-handle side), locate the magnetic brake assembly. Ensure the sliding magnets move freely. Use a dry cotton swab to wipe away any dust or moisture from the magnets and the spool's flat surface. Do not apply grease to the magnets.
Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Maintenance
The C5 series utilizes precision-cut gears that provide a smooth, high-speed retrieve. Proper lubrication prevents the gears from developing a "mesh" vibration.
-
Cleaning: Remove the screws securing the right side plate to the frame pillars. Lift the plate to reveal the drive shaft, main gear, and pinion. Degrease all components to remove old, contaminated lubricant.
-
Grease Application: Apply a light, consistent coat of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear. This grease provides a resilient film that protects against high-torque wear while ensuring a silent retrieve.
-
Clutch Mechanism: Apply a small amount of grease to the pinion yoke and the thumb-bar kick lever to ensure the release mechanism remains snappy and responsive.
Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler Gear System
On the 4600C5, the levelwind is synchronized with the spool. Because this reel is designed for precision casting, eliminating drag in the levelwind is paramount.
-
Worm Shaft Service: Unscrew the pawl cap from the bottom of the line guide and remove the pawl. Slide the worm shaft out and clean the spiral grooves of any grit or slurry.
-
Idler Gear Inspection: Locate the nylon idler gear on the frame. This gear bridges the spool and the levelwind system. Ensure the teeth are clean and unobstructed.
-
Oil Application: Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the Levelwind Worm Shaft and the Idler Gear. Using oil here instead of grease is essential for the C5 series. The light viscosity of Deuthlon oil ensures that the levelwind tracks with minimal resistance, allowing the magnetic braking system to control the cast without interference from mechanical friction.
Phase 4: Bearings and Spool Spindle
-
Bearing Service: The C5 features high-quality stainless steel bearings. Locate the two spool bearings (one in the tension knob and one in the side plate).
-
Lubrication: Clean the bearings thoroughly. Apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing race. This oil is formulated to maintain its integrity at high RPMs, providing maximum distance and smoothness.
-
Mechanical Tension: Wipe the ends of the spool spindle clean and apply a micro-drop of oil to the contact points inside the tension knob.
Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing
-
Gear Box Rebuild: Reseat the pinion gear into the yoke and slide the main gear and drag stack back onto the drive shaft.
-
Frame Assembly: Reattach the right side plate to the frame and tighten the internal screws.
-
Insert Spool: Slide the spool back into the frame. Attach the right side plate and tighten the thumb screws.
-
Final Hardware: Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, handle, and 10mm nut. Secure the locking cap.
Performance Verification
Depress the thumb bar to verify the free-spool mode. Adjust the Mag X slider to ensure the magnetic resistance changes as expected. Spin the spool by hand; the line guide should track smoothly. Turn the handle to engage the gears. The combination of Deuthlon Reel Grease on the primary gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler gears ensures your Ambassadeur 4600C5 Mag X operates at peak efficiency.
