Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 3500C (Foot Number 83-1)

The Ambassadeur 3500C (83-1), produced in 1983, is a unique and highly collectible "narrow-frame" variant of the 4500/5500 series. The "C" indicates it is equipped with high-speed ball bearings, making it an early pioneer for what we now call Bait Finesse System (BFS) fishing. Its narrow spool reduces rotational inertia, allowing for incredible casting accuracy and the ability to throw lighter lures.

Reels from the early 80s often suffer from "dried-out" grease that can make the retrieve feel geary. Modernizing this classic with Deuthlon lubricants will unlock its true potential for finesse applications.

Tools and Preparation

  • Precision Screwdrivers: Traditional flathead (thin-blade).

  • Wrench: 10mm for the handle nut.

  • Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a high-quality reel degreaser.

  • Lubricants: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube (Reel Oil).

1. External Disassembly

  1. Handle Side: Remove the handle nut locking screw, the 10mm nut, and the handle. Remove the star drag. Note the orientation of the two curved copper spring washers.

  2. Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Pull the right-side plate away from the frame.

  3. Spool Removal: Slide the narrow spool out. Take care not to lose the two small centrifugal brake blocks on the spool spindle.

2. Deep Cleaning the Internals

The 3500C relies on high-precision tolerances. Even a small amount of grit in the narrow frame can cause significant performance loss.

  • The Drive Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. In 1983, these were often fiber or early composite. If they aren't brittle, wipe them clean. For maximum performance, modern carbon fiber washers are a great upgrade.

  • The Pinion & Yoke: The pinion gear on the 3500C is small and delicate. Ensure the bore (the hole the spool shaft passes through) is polished and perfectly clean.

  • Level Wind: Disassemble the worm gear and pawl. Since the level wind is non-disengaging (moves during the cast), this area is the #1 cause of short casts if left dirty.

3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

The goal for the 3500C is ultra-low startup inertia for light lures.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a translucent coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the teeth. This grease "clings" to the brass, providing a silent retrieve and protecting the vintage teeth from pitting.

  • Clutch Mechanism: Apply a small amount to the kick lever and the sliding surfaces of the yoke.

  • Yoke Posts: Lightly coat the two posts the pinion yoke slides on for a smooth, effortless thumb-bar reset.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • Spool Bearings: Clean the two ball bearings (usually one in the side plate and one in the tension cap). Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil is essential for BFS-style performance, allowing the narrow spool to spin up instantly.

  • Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. Never use grease here. Using Deuthlon oil on the level wind significantly reduces the mechanical load during the cast.

  • Spool Shaft: Wipe a very thin film along the shaft where it meets the pinion gear.

4. Reassembly and Tuning

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the "diamond" grooves.

  2. Internal Stack: Replace the pinion, yoke, and main gear assembly. Ensure the anti-reverse dog is properly seated.

  3. Side Plate: Reattach the plate and secure the thumb screws.

  4. Calibration: Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.

Technical Performance Note

The Ambassadeur 3500C (83-1) is arguably the best "small" round reel for those who want a mix of vintage feel and modern performance. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are removing the friction barriers that usually hold these older reels back. This maintenance ensures your 3500C remains a finesse powerhouse, capable of competing with many modern low-profile reels.
