Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 3500C (Foot Number 83-0)
The Ambassadeur 3500C (83-0), produced in 1983, is a "narrow-spool" masterpiece. It is the narrower brother to the 4500C/5500C and is highly coveted by finesse anglers and collectors alike. The "C" indicates high-speed ball bearings, which, combined with the low rotational inertia of the narrow spool, makes this reel an exceptional performer for throwing light lures (BFS).
At over 40 years old, the original mineral lubricants have likely turned into a sticky residue. Modernizing this reel with Deuthlon synthetics will transform its "vintage" feel into something sharp, silent, and incredibly fast.
Tools and Lubricants Required
-
Precision Screwdrivers: Traditional flathead (small and medium).
-
Wrench: 10mm for the handle nut.
-
Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a specialized reel degreaser.
-
Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.
-
Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).
1. External Disassembly
-
Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut locking screw, the 10mm nut, and the handle. Remove the star drag. Note the orientation of the two curved copper spring washers underneath.
-
Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Carefully pull the right-side plate away from the frame.
-
Spool removal: Slide the narrow spool out. Watch the brakes: The two small white centrifugal brake blocks on the spool pins are loose and can easily fall off.
2. Deep Cleaning and Inspection
The 3500C has tighter tolerances than the wider models. Even a tiny amount of grit can feel "crunchy" in a narrow frame.
-
The Gear Stack: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. In 1983, these were often fiber or early composite. Unless they are crumbling, wipe them dry. If they are saturated with old oil, consider an upgrade to carbon fiber washers.
-
The Pinion Gear: This is a high-wear item. Ensure the bore is polished and the teeth are free of debris.
-
The Level Wind: Disassemble the worm gear and pawl. Because the 3500C level wind is non-disengaging (it moves during the cast), any friction here directly kills your casting distance.
3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
The secret to a high-performance 3500C is using lubricants that don't cause "fluid drag."
Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a very light, translucent coat to the teeth. Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease is ideal because it stays in the gear mesh even at high speeds, providing a "silent" feel that modernizes the retrieve.
-
Clutch Linkage: Apply a small amount to the kick lever and the sliding surfaces of the yoke.
-
Yoke Posts: Lightly coat the two posts the pinion yoke slides on to ensure a smooth, effortless thumb-bar engagement.
Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):
-
Spool Bearings: Clean the two ball bearings (one in the side plate, one in the tension cap). Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil is critical for BFS-style performance, allowing the narrow spool to start spinning with much less inertia.
-
Worm Shaft (Level Wind): Apply one drop to the worm gear. Never use grease here. Using oil instead of grease on the level wind is a major performance boost for the 3500C, as it reduces the mechanical load during the cast.
-
Spool Shaft: Wipe a thin film of oil along the shaft where it passes through the pinion gear.
4. Reassembly and Tuning
-
Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the "diamond" grooves of the shaft.
-
Internal Assembly: Replace the pinion, yoke, and main gear assembly. Ensure the anti-reverse dog is properly engaged with the ratchet.
-
Final Fastening: Secure the side plate with the three thumb screws. Reinstall the star drag, spring washers, and handle.
-
Spool Tension: Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.
Performance Summary
The Ambassadeur 3500C (83-0) is a finesse powerhouse. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you remove the mechanical resistance that usually plagues vintage reels. This allows the 3500C to cast lures as light as 2–3 grams with the precision and smoothness of a modern reel, while retaining its classic 1980s character.
