Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2601C IAR (Foot Number 07-00)

The Ambassadeur 2601C IAR (07-00) is one of the most sought-after "small-frame" reels in the Abu Garcia lineup. It is a left-handed model that features a thumb-bar spool release—a departure from the push-button style of the 1500/2500 series—and the Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR) system.

The 2601C is a favorite for high-end BFS (Bait Finesse System) tuning. Because the thumb-bar mechanism is more complex than the standard 2500C, precise lubrication with high-performance synthetics is mandatory to prevent the linkage from becoming sluggish.

Tools and Lubricants Required

  • Tools: Precision flathead screwdriver, 10mm nut driver, tweezers, and a small brush.

  • Cleaning: Isopropyl alcohol or a professional-grade degreaser.

  • Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.

  • Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).

1. External Disassembly

  1. Handle and Drag: Remove the handle nut locking screw and the 10mm handle nut (remember: this is a left-handed reel). Remove the handle, the spring washer, and the star drag.

  2. Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the left side plate. Carefully pull the side plate assembly away from the frame.

  3. Spool Removal: Slide the spool out of the frame. The 2601C uses a fixed-shaft system where the bearings are housed within the spool or on the side plate depending on the specific spool upgrade installed; note the placement of the two centrifugal brake blocks.

2. The Thumb-Bar and IAR Mechanism

The 2601C features a complex "kick lever" and sliding bar linked to the thumb bar.

  • Cleaning the Linkage: Wipe down the internal thumb bar slider. Dust and old grease often accumulate here, making the release feel "mushy."

  • IAR Bearing: The Instant Anti-Reverse bearing is located in the side plate. Clean the inner rollers with a cotton swab and solvent. Ensure the metal IAR sleeve (which sits on the drive shaft) is polished and free of debris.

  • Drive Gears: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. Clean the teeth of the main gear and the pinion gear thoroughly.

3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

For a high-performance reel like the 2601C, standard retail greases are often too heavy, increasing the effort required to turn the handle.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a light, uniform coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the gear teeth. Its "stay-put" properties ensure the brass gears remain silent and protected under the high-pressure loads of a fish fight.

  • Thumb-Bar Linkage: Apply grease to the sliding contact points and the pivot of the kick lever. This is crucial for maintaining the crisp "click" of the thumb bar engagement.

  • Yoke: Lightly coat the pinion yoke to ensure it slides freely on the support posts.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • Spool Bearings: Clean the bearings and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil is specifically formulated to reduce the start-up inertia of the spool, which is vital for casting light finesse lures.

  • IAR Sleeve: Apply an extremely thin film of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the IAR sleeve. Do not use grease here, as it will cause the anti-reverse to fail in cold conditions.

  • Worm Shaft (Level Wind): Apply one or two drops to the worm gear. Using oil instead of grease on the level wind of a 2601C allows for a faster, more fluid line lay during high-speed retrieves.

4. Reassembly and Testing

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the "diamond" track of the worm gear.

  2. Internal Stack: Place the pinion and yoke back into position. Reinstall the main gear, drag washers, and the IAR sleeve.

  3. Plate Alignment: Carefully align the side plate with the drive shaft. Ensure the thumb bar linkage is positioned correctly to engage the clutch.

  4. Final Polish: Reinstall the star drag and handle. Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.

Technical Performance Note

The Ambassadeur 2601C IAR is a precision instrument. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are treating the reel to a professional-grade friction reduction system. This setup not only extends the life of the vintage brass internals but also provides the ultra-smooth, "floating" sensation that Ambassadeur enthusiasts prize. Regular maintenance of the thumb bar linkage with Deuthlon grease will prevent the common "sticking" issue found in neglected 2601C models.
