Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2600C IAR (Foot Number 07-00)
The Ambassadeur 2600C IAR (07-00) is the right-handed counterpart to the 2601C. It is a premium, small-frame reel that bridges the gap between vintage aesthetics and modern ergonomics. Featuring a thumb-bar spool release and the Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR) system, this model is a favorite for technical baitcasting and "trout-bum" finesse fishing.
Because the 2600C uses a more intricate clutch linkage than the classic side-button 2500C, it requires specific lubrication to ensure the thumb bar doesn't become stiff or fail to "pop" back after a cast.
Tools and Lubrication Requirements
-
Tools: Precision flathead screwdriver, 10mm nut driver, and a cleaning brush.
-
Cleaning: Isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated reel degreaser.
-
Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease (for high-load and mechanical sliding parts).
-
Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil / Cast Lube (for high-speed rotation and the IAR sleeve).
1. Disassembly and Internal Access
-
Handle Side: Remove the handle nut locking screw and the 10mm nut. Remove the handle arm, the spring washer (bent washer), and the star drag.
-
Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Pull the right side plate (handle side) away from the frame.
-
Spool & Brakes: Slide the spool out. Take care not to lose the two small centrifugal brake blocks sitting on the spool pins.
-
IAR Sleeve: Note the polished metal tube (sleeve) sitting on the drive shaft. This part often stays stuck inside the side plate's roller bearing; slide it out for cleaning.
2. Cleaning and Inspection
The 07-00 production series has tight mechanical tolerances. Even dried, "crusty" factory grease can significantly slow down the retrieve.
-
Drive Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. Clean the gear teeth until they are bare metal.
-
The Thumb-Bar Linkage: The 2600C uses a sliding plate and a kick lever. Clean the track where the thumb bar slides. If this area is dirty, the reel will be difficult to engage.
-
IAR Bearing: This is the one-way roller bearing pressed into the side plate. Use a cotton swab with solvent to remove old oil and debris. It must be perfectly clean to ensure the "Instant" anti-reverse works.
3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
For a precision reel like the 2600C, the "less is more" rule applies, provided you use high-performance lubricants.
Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:
-
Main & Pinion Gear: Apply a light, even coat to the teeth of both gears. Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease provides a superior boundary layer that eliminates the "gritty" feel often found in small brass gears.
-
Clutch Linkage & Kick Lever: Apply grease to the points where the thumb bar slider moves against the frame and the kick lever. This ensures the thumb bar is crisp and responsive.
-
Yoke: Coat the pinion yoke and the two posts it slides on.
Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):
-
Spool Bearings: Clean the bearings and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil is designed for ultra-low startup inertia, which is essential if you are using this reel for light-lure BFS (Bait Finesse) fishing.
-
IAR Sleeve: Apply a very thin film of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the exterior of the sleeve. Never use grease here, as grease can cause the IAR rollers to stick, leading to handle "back-play."
-
Worm Gear (Level Wind): Apply 1-2 drops to the worm shaft. This keeps the level wind moving effortlessly without the drag of traditional grease.
4. Reassembly and Setup
-
Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide carriage. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the worm gear track.
-
Internal Assembly: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and yoke springs. Reinstall the main gear and drag stack.
-
IAR Integration: Slide the IAR sleeve onto the drive shaft, then fit the side plate over it.
-
Side Plate: Secure the three thumb screws. Ensure the thumb bar operates smoothly before reattaching the handle.
-
Final Adjustments: Reinstall the star drag and handle. Adjust the cast control knob until the spool has minimal side-to-side play.
Maintenance Tip
The Ambassadeur 2600C IAR is a mechanical work of art. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease, you prevent the premature wear of the brass drive gear—a common issue in these smaller models. Regular application of Deuthlon Cast Lube to the spool bearings will ensure that your 2600C continues to cast as well as, or better than, many modern low-profile reels.
