Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2500C IAR (Foot Number 04-00)
The Ambassadeur 2500C IAR (04-00) is perhaps the most iconic small-frame casting reel ever produced. The "04-00" designation signifies a later production run featuring the Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR) system. This model is the gold standard for ultra-light and BFS (Bait Finesse System) tuning due to its high-precision tolerances and classic aesthetics.
Unlike the older 2500C models that use a mechanical anti-reverse dog, the IAR version uses a one-way roller bearing. This requires specific care; if the IAR bearing is over-lubricated or greased, the handle will slip, especially in cold weather.
Tools and Lubricants Required
-
Tools: Precision flathead screwdriver, 10mm nut driver, and tweezers.
-
Cleaning: Isopropyl alcohol or a specialized ultrasonic cleaner solution.
-
Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.
-
Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).
1. External Disassembly
-
Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut locking screw and the 10mm nut. Remove the handle arm, the curved spring washer, and the star drag.
-
Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Gently pull the right-side plate away from the frame.
-
The IAR Sleeve: A polished stainless steel sleeve sits on the drive shaft. This sleeve slides into the IAR bearing inside the side plate. Remove it and set it aside for cleaning.
-
Spool Removal: Slide the spool out of the frame. Note the two small centrifugal brake blocks on the spool pins; these are easily lost.
2. Deep Cleaning and Component Care
The 2500C IAR is sensitive to "fluid friction." Old, thick grease will make the reel feel sluggish.
-
The Gear Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. In the 04-00 model, the drag washers should be kept clean and dry. Use a brush to remove every trace of old lubricant from the teeth of the main gear and pinion.
-
The IAR Bearing: Located inside the side plate. Do not soak the side plate in harsh solvents if it has plastic parts attached. Instead, use a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to clean the rollers of the IAR bearing until no residue remains.
-
Level Wind: Remove the worm gear and pawl. Clean the "diamond" grooves of the worm shaft. Any grit here will translate directly into the handle during the retrieve.
3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
To achieve the "floating" feel synonymous with a high-end 2500C, use lubricants that provide high protection with minimal drag.
Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a very light, translucent coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the teeth. This grease is formulated to provide a "silent" mesh and prevents the brass-on-brass wear common in these high-RPM small gears.
-
Clutch Linkage: Apply a small amount to the kick lever and the sliding surfaces of the yoke.
-
Yoke Posts: Lightly coat the two posts that the pinion yoke slides on to ensure effortless engagement.
Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):
-
Spool Bearings: This is the most vital step for BFS performance. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each bearing. Its ultra-low viscosity ensures the spool starts spinning with the slightest flick of the rod.
-
IAR Sleeve (Critical): Apply an extremely thin film of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the exterior of the IAR sleeve. Do not use grease. The oil provides corrosion protection while allowing the IAR rollers to bite instantly.
-
Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. On the 2500C, using oil instead of grease on the level wind significantly reduces the load on the gear train.
4. Reassembly and Tuning
-
Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly.
-
Drive System: Replace the pinion, yoke, and springs. Reinstall the main gear and drag stack.
-
Sleeve and Plate: Slide the cleaned IAR sleeve over the drive shaft. Align the side plate and slide it over the sleeve. If you feel resistance, do not force it; ensure the sleeve is centered.
-
Final Fastening: Secure the three thumb screws. Reinstall the star drag, spring washer, and handle.
-
Spool Tension: Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.
Performance Summary
The Ambassadeur 2500C IAR (04-00) is a mechanical masterpiece. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are removing the internal resistance that plagues these reels when serviced with standard "thick" lubricants. This allows the 2500C to perform at its peak, handling lures as light as 2 grams with the precision and smoothness of a modern high-end reel.
