Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2500C (Foot Number 78-11-01)

The Ambassadeur 2500C (78-11-01), manufactured in November 1978, is a cornerstone of vintage fishing tackle. This specific era is highly prized for its "Silver" aesthetic and robust mechanical design. Unlike modern IAR (Instant Anti-Reverse) models, the 78-11-01 utilizes a mechanical anti-reverse dog system.

Because this reel is nearly 50 years old, the original mineral oils have likely migrated or evaporated. Restoration with modern synthetic lubricants like Deuthlon can dramatically improve its performance, often exceeding the original factory specifications.

Tools and Preparation

  • Precision Flathead Screwdriver: Essential to avoid marring the soft brass and plated screws.

  • 10mm Wrench: For the handle nut.

  • Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a professional-grade degreaser.

  • Lubrication: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube (Reel Oil).

1. Disassembly of the 1978 Drive Side

  1. Handle Removal: Unscrew the handle nut retainer screw, then the 10mm nut. Remove the handle and the star drag wheel. Note the orientation of the two copper tension washers (curved shims).

  2. Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Pull the right side plate away from the frame.

  3. Spool: Slide the spool out. Check the two centrifugal brake blocks on the spool pins; in a 1978 model, these are often small, brownish/white fiber blocks.

  4. Anti-Reverse Dog: Inside the side plate, locate the mechanical anti-reverse dog. It is a small "claw" that sits on the drive shaft ratchet. Be careful not to lose the tiny copper friction springs that hold it in place.

2. Deep Cleaning the Vintage Internals

Old grease from the 70s often turns into a sticky "varnish" that inhibits casting distance.

  • Gear Stack: Remove the main gear and the drag washers. In 1978, these were often leather or thick fiber. If they are greasy, wipe them down. For a performance boost, consider replacing them with modern carbon fiber, but keep the originals if you are a collector.

  • Level Wind: Remove the worm shaft and the pawl. This is the most common area for grit accumulation.

  • Spool Shaft: Wipe the integrated spool shaft until it is mirror-bright.

3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

Using Deuthlon products on a vintage 2500C transforms the reel from a "shelf queen" into a high-performance tool.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main and Pinion Gear: Apply a light, even coat to the teeth using a fine brush. Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease is superior for vintage brass gears because it stays in the teeth under load, dampening the vibration and noise often found in older reels.

  • Mechanical Anti-Reverse Dog: Apply a tiny amount to the dog and the ratchet teeth. This dampens the "clicking" sound and prevents wear on the copper friction springs.

  • Clutch Mechanism: Grease the yoke and the kick lever where they slide against the frame.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • Spool Bearings: Clean the two ball bearings and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil is critical for the 2500C; its low viscosity allows the reel to cast much lighter lures than it could with standard factory oil.

  • Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. On a 2500C, the level wind is always engaged during the cast; using Deuthlon oil here instead of grease significantly increases casting distance by reducing "level wind drag."

  • Drive Shaft: A single drop at the base of the shaft will ensure smooth winding under the pressure of a fish.

4. Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide carriage. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly before tightening the cap.

  2. Internal Assembly: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and the main gear assembly. Ensure the anti-reverse dog is properly "hugging" the drive shaft ratchet.

  3. Side Plate: Reattach the side plate and secure the three thumb screws. Ensure the clutch engages and disengages with a crisp "click."

  4. Tuning: Reinstall the star drag and handle. Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.

Performance Note

The Ambassadeur 2500C (78-11-01) is legendary for its longevity. By utilizing Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease, you provide a modern protective layer that guards the vintage brass teeth against pitting. Combined with Deuthlon Cast Lube, you enable this 1978 classic to compete with modern finesse reels, offering a smooth, "connected" feel that only a well-maintained vintage Ambassadeur can provide.
