Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2500 (Round Reel Series)

The Ambassadeur 2500 is the non-bearing version of the legendary 2500C. While the "C" designates a model equipped with ball bearings, the standard 2500 relies on high-precision brass or bronze bushings. These reels are prized by collectors and traditionalists for their incredible durability and "tank-like" construction.

Because this model uses bushings rather than bearings, the choice of lubricant is the single most important factor in its performance. Using a high-performance synthetic like Deuthlon can make a bushing-supported spool spin with a fluid smoothness that rivals many mid-range bearing reels.

Tools and Lubricants Required

  • Precision Screwdrivers: Standard flathead (hollow-ground is best for vintage screws).

  • Wrench: 10mm for the handle nut.

  • Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated reel degreaser.

  • Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.

  • Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).

1. External Disassembly

  1. Handle Assembly: Remove the locking screw, the 10mm handle nut, and the handle arm. Take care not to lose the small tension shims located under the star drag.

  2. Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the handle side. Carefully pull the side plate assembly away from the frame.

  3. Spool and Bushings: Slide the spool out of the frame. You will notice brass or bronze bushings at either end of the spool or housed within the side plates. These are the primary friction points during the cast.

2. Deep Cleaning the Mechanical Drive

Vintage Ambassadeurs often suffer from "grease-binding," where old lubricant has thickened over decades.

  • The Gear Stack: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. Clean the gear teeth thoroughly with a soft brush and solvent. Ensure the drive shaft is polished and free of oxidation.

  • The Anti-Reverse Dog: The standard 2500 uses a mechanical anti-reverse dog. Clean the dog and the ratchet teeth. If the copper friction springs on the dog are bent, gently reshape them with tweezers to ensure they "hug" the ratchet properly.

  • Level Wind: Remove the worm gear and pawl. Clean the "diamond" grooves of the worm shaft. Since the 2500 spool is relatively heavy, a clean level wind is vital for casting performance.

3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

Bushings require a lubricant that provides a constant boundary layer to prevent metal-on-metal heat buildup.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the teeth. This grease is engineered to stay on the gears rather than migrating to the drag washers. It provides a "cushioned" feel that softens the mechanical feedback of the brass gears.

  • Clutch Linkage: Apply to the yoke and the kick lever.

  • Anti-Reverse Dog: A tiny dab of grease on the dog will quiet the mechanical "click" during the retrieve.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • The Bushings (Critical): This is where the 2500 finds its life. Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the inner bore of each brass bushing. Unlike standard oils that can vanish under high-speed rotation, Deuthlon's formula maintains a high-strength film that allows the spool to spin freely and quietly.

  • Spool Shaft: Wipe a very thin film of oil along the length of the spool shaft.

  • Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. Using oil here instead of grease is a "pro-tip" for the 2500, as it reduces the mechanical load on the drive train.

4. Reassembly and Tuning

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly before tightening the cap.

  2. Internal Stack: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and main gear assembly. Ensure the anti-reverse dog is properly engaged.

  3. Side Plate: Secure the side plate with the thumb screws.

  4. Calibration: Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears. On a bushing reel like the 2500, over-tightening this knob will cause immediate wear on the bronze surfaces—always leave a "micro-click" of play.

Performance Insight

The Ambassadeur 2500 is a workhorse that can last a lifetime. By utilizing Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are upgrading the vintage bushing system to modern standards. This combination eliminates the "slow" feeling typical of older reels and protects the brass internals from the pitting and corrosion that can occur with cheaper mineral-based products.
