Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2005LP (Foot Number 14-00)

The Ambassadeur 2005LP (14-00) represents Abu Garcia’s foray into the ergonomic low-profile market during the early 2000s. Unlike the traditional round reels, the 2005LP features a graphite or composite frame and a more compact internal gear cluster. It is a workhorse designed for comfort and accessibility, but its performance is highly dependent on keeping the "clutch-and-cam" system clean.

Because the 2005LP utilizes a mix of metal and synthetic components, choosing the right lubricants is vital. Deuthlon products are ideal here because they are plastic-safe and offer high-performance film strength for the high-speed bearings.

Tools and Preparation

  • Screwdrivers: Phillips #0 and a small flathead.

  • Wrench: 10mm for the handle nut.

  • Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol (ensure it is safe for plastics/composites).

  • Lubrication: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube (Reel Oil).

1. External Disassembly

  1. Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut cap screw, the 10mm nut, and the handle. Remove the star drag and the spring washers. Note that this model often has a thin "clicker" shim under the star drag.

  2. Side Plate Access: On the 2005LP, the non-handle side plate usually features a "Quick Access" dial or screws. Remove this plate to extract the spool.

  3. Spool Removal: Slide the spool out and inspect the centrifugal brake weights. These are typically the "swing-out" style. Ensure they move freely on their pins.

2. Internal Mechanical Overhaul

The 14-00 model utilizes a sliding yoke system that can become sluggish if old grease attracts grit.

  • Gear Side Plate: Remove the three or four screws holding the handle-side gear housing. Carefully lift the plate to reveal the drive gear and pinion.

  • Drive Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. The 2005LP often uses a mix of felt or composite drag washers. Wipe these clean with a dry cloth; if they are heavily contaminated with oil, they should be replaced with carbon fiber.

  • Clutch Mechanism: The 2005LP features a plastic kick lever and a metal cam. This is the "brain" of the reel and must be thoroughly degreased.

3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

The transition to a low-profile frame creates tighter internal spaces, making high-quality lubrication even more important.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main & Pinion Gears: Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the teeth. This grease provides a superior "tack" that prevents it from being flung off the gears at high speeds, ensuring a silent and smooth retrieve.

  • Clutch & Sliding Parts: Apply grease to the yoke, the kick lever, and the cam slider. Deuthlon grease is excellent for these plastic-on-metal contacts as it reduces friction without degrading the synthetic parts.

  • Worm Shaft: Apply a light layer to the level wind's worm gear.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • Spool Bearings: The 2005LP features high-speed ball bearings. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil is engineered to survive high RPMs while maintaining an ultra-low friction coefficient, giving you back the casting distance lost to factory lubricants.

  • Spool Shaft: Wipe a micro-film of oil on the spool shaft where it passes through the pinion gear.

  • Level Wind Pawl: Place one drop on the pawl inside the line guide carriage for effortless side-to-side travel.

4. Reassembly and Tuning

  1. Gear Stack: Reinstall the pinion, yoke, and main gear. Ensure the yoke springs are seated vertically before closing the side plate.

  2. Housing: Replace the gear-side plate and tighten the screws.

  3. Spool Integration: Slide the spool into the frame. Reattach the non-handle side plate.

  4. Final Setup: Reinstall the star drag and handle. Adjust the cast control knob until the spool has zero side-to-side play.

Technical Performance Note

The Ambassadeur 2005LP (14-00) is often overlooked but provides excellent utility when properly maintained. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you solve the two biggest issues with this model: "clutch-drag" and "bearing noise." The result is a reel that feels significantly more expensive and performs with modern efficiency.
