Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2000C (Foot Number 82-06-00)

The Ambassadeur 2000C (82-06-00) is a classic "narrow-spool" round reel produced in June 1982. The "C" indicates it is equipped with high-quality ball bearings, making it a favorite for anglers who appreciate vintage craftsmanship but desire modern casting performance. This model features a fixed-axle design and a mechanical anti-reverse system.

Maintenance on this early 80s model is straightforward but requires attention to the specific spacing of shims and the health of the vintage drag stack.

Tools and Lubrication Kit

  • Screwdrivers: Precision flathead (hollow-ground to prevent screw marring).

  • Wrench: 10mm for the handle nut.

  • Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a high-purity degreaser.

  • Lubrication: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube (Reel Oil).

1. External Teardown

  1. Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut locking screw and the 10mm nut. Slide off the handle, the spring tension washer, and the star drag. Note the order of the shims located under the star drag.

  2. Side Plate Removal: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the handle side. Carefully pull the side plate assembly away from the frame.

  3. Spool Access: Slide the spool out of the frame. Note the two small centrifugal brake weights on the spool pins. Ensure these do not fall off during cleaning.

2. Internal Mechanical Overhaul

The 82-06-00 utilizes a mechanical anti-reverse dog that provides the characteristic vintage "click."

  • The Gear Stack: Remove the main gear and the drag washers from the drive shaft. In the 1982 models, the drag washers may be a composite material; if they are not glazed or brittle, they can be cleaned and reused. If they show signs of wear, upgrade to carbon fiber.

  • Cleaning the Gears: Use a soft brush and solvent to remove old, oxidized grease from the main and pinion gears.

  • Level Wind: Remove the worm gear and pawl. The level wind on the 2000C is non-disengaging (it moves during the cast), so it must be completely free of debris to ensure maximum casting distance.

3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

Using high-performance synthetic lubricants is the best way to modernize the feel of an early 80s Ambassadeur.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a light, even coat to the gear teeth. Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease provides a high-pressure boundary layer that protects the brass gear teeth from wear while providing a quiet, smooth retrieve.

  • Clutch Linkage: Apply grease to the kick lever and the sliding surfaces of the yoke.

  • Anti-Reverse Dog: Apply a small dab to the dog and the ratchet wheel to ensure silent, reliable operation.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • Spool Bearings: Clean the two ball bearings and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil is designed to minimize start-up inertia, allowing you to cast light lures further.

  • Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. On the 2000C, using oil instead of grease on the level wind significantly reduces the mechanical load during the cast.

  • Spool Shaft: Wipe a very thin film of oil along the length of the shaft to prevent corrosion and facilitate smooth rotation through the pinion gear.

4. Reassembly and Tuning

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the track before tightening the cap.

  2. Internal Assembly: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and main gear assembly. Ensure the anti-reverse dog "hugs" the drive shaft ratchet correctly.

  3. Frame Integration: Slide the spool back into the frame. Ensure the brake blocks are pushed inward toward the shaft before closing the side plate.

  4. Final Fastening: Secure the side plate with the three thumb screws.

  5. Tensioning: Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.

Technical Performance Note

The Ambassadeur 2000C (82-06-00) is a durable masterpiece. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are replacing outdated 1980s lubricants with modern technology that prevents the "stiff" feeling common in vintage reels. This maintenance routine ensures the reel remains a reliable, high-performing tool for decades to come.
