Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 10000CL (Foot Number 84-2)
The Ambassadeur 10000CL (84-2) is a vintage saltwater heavyweight produced in early 1984. This "CL" (Centrifugal Level-wind) model was engineered for high-capacity surf and boat fishing, featuring a synchronized level wind system where the line guide tracks back and forth during the cast to minimize line friction.
By 1984, Abu Garcia had perfected the brass-on-brass gear architecture found in these reels. However, because the 10000CL has a massive spool and a synchronized level wind, it is prone to "mechanical drag." Using high-performance Deuthlon lubricants is the most effective way to restore its free-spool efficiency and protect its vintage internals.
Tools and Lubricants Required
-
Precision Screwdrivers: Medium flathead (hollow-ground to protect vintage screw heads).
-
Wrench: 11mm for the handle nut.
-
Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a professional-grade degreaser.
-
Lubrication: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube (Reel Oil).
1. External Teardown
-
Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut locking screw and the 11mm nut. Pull off the power handle and the star drag. Take note of the Belleville washers (tension springs) under the star drag; these must be oriented properly to maintain the reel's 20lb+ drag potential.
-
Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Carefully pull the handle side plate away from the frame.
-
Spool Removal: Slide the heavy spool out. Inspect the large drive cog on the non-handle side of the spool. This cog drives the level wind system and must be free of salt and grit.
2. Deep Cleaning the 1980s Internals
After four decades, the original mineral-based grease in a 10000CL has likely oxidized into a waxy substance that hinders the synchronized level wind.
-
The Gear Stack: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. The 1984 models used a combination of metal and early composite washers. Clean the metal "keyed" washers until they are mirror-bright.
-
The Pinion & Yoke: Remove the pinion gear and the plastic yoke. Clean the inside of the pinion bore; any friction here will cause the reel to feel "geary" during the retrieve.
-
Level Wind: Remove the worm shaft and the pawl. Because the line guide moves during the cast, the worm shaft must be surgically clean.
3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
The goal for a 10000CL is to provide heavy-duty protection while reducing the energy required to move the synchronized line guide.
Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:
-
Main and Pinion Gear: Apply a light, even coat to the gear teeth. Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease is superior for these large brass gears because its high-pressure additives prevent the teeth from "pitting" under the torque of heavy fish.
-
Clutch Linkage: Apply grease to the kick lever and the sliding surfaces of the yoke. This ensures the release button remains crisp and doesn't stick under the pressure of a full spool.
-
Drive Cogs: Apply a tiny amount of grease to the plastic cogs that connect the spool to the level wind system.
Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):
-
Spool Bearings: Clean the large spool bearings and apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil’s ultra-low friction allows the heavy 10000-series spool to start spinning with much less inertia.
-
Worm Shaft (Critical): Apply two drops of oil to the worm gear. Never use grease here on a synchronized model like the 10000CL. Grease creates a "braking" effect during the cast; Deuthlon oil ensures the level wind moves effortlessly.
-
Spool Shaft: Wipe a micro-film of oil along the length of the shaft to prevent corrosion from saltwater exposure.
4. Reassembly and Calibration
-
Level Wind Timing: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. When sliding the spool back into the frame, ensure the spool cog meshes perfectly with the level wind drive gear.
-
Internal Assembly: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and main gear assembly. Ensure the drag washers are seated perfectly flat.
-
Side Plate: Reattach the side plate and secure the thumb screws. Test the clutch engagement to ensure it resets properly when the handle is turned.
-
Tensioning: Adjust the cast control knob (on the non-handle side) until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.
Technical Performance Note
The Ambassadeur 10000CL (84-2) is a mechanical powerhouse. By replacing outdated mineral lubricants with Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are solving the common "sluggish" feeling associated with vintage synchronized reels. This maintenance routine protects the high-torque brass internals while significantly increasing the casting efficiency of this saltwater classic.
