Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 10 (Foot Number 88-0)
The Ambassadeur 10 (88-0) is a unique departure from the traditional round-bodied reels Abu Garcia is famous for. Produced in the late 1980s, this model was designed as a budget-friendly, high-capacity utility reel. It features a simplified internal structure, a graphite-reinforced frame, and a distinct mechanical configuration that lacks the intricate ball bearings found in the "C" series.
Because the Ambassadeur 10 relies heavily on bushings and direct mechanical contact, it is prone to friction-related wear and "sluggishness." Modernizing the lubrication with Deuthlon synthetics is the single most effective way to improve its casting distance and retrieve smoothness.
Tools and Lubricants Required
-
Precision Screwdrivers: Medium Phillips head and a small flathead.
-
Wrench: 10mm for the handle nut.
-
Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol (safe for graphite and plastic components).
-
Lubrication: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube (Reel Oil).
1. External Disassembly
-
Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut locking screw, the 10mm nut, and the handle arm. Take care not to lose the small star drag clicker spring (if equipped) and the tension washers under the star drag.
-
Side Plate Removal: Unlike the round reels with thumb screws, the Ambassadeur 10 often uses Phillips head screws to secure the side plates to the frame. Remove these and carefully lift the handle-side plate.
-
Spool Access: Slide the spool out. Note the fixed axle design. The "bearings" on this model are actually copper or brass bushings located in the side plates.
2. Internal Mechanical Overhaul
The 88-0 internal layout is simpler than a 5000 series but requires careful cleaning of the "clutch and cam" system.
-
The Drive Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. The Ambassadeur 10 typically uses a basic drag system. Clean the metal washers and ensure the friction material is free of grit.
-
The Pinion & Yoke: Remove the pinion gear and the plastic yoke. In this model, the yoke springs are often seated directly into the graphite frame; ensure these recesses are clean.
-
Level Wind: The level wind is driven by a plastic gear on the end of the spool. Ensure the teeth on this gear are not chipped or clogged with old grease.
3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
Since this reel uses bushings, the choice of oil is critical. Standard oils can "dry out" or attract dust, leading to rapid wear of the bronze surfaces.
Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:
-
Main & Pinion Gears: Apply a light, even coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the gear teeth. This grease is ideal for the Ambassadeur 10 because it cushions the coarser gear mesh found in these utility models, making the retrieve feel more refined and silent.
-
Clutch Linkage: Apply grease to the kick lever and the sliding surfaces of the yoke.
-
Level Wind Drive Gears: Apply a very small amount to the plastic drive cogs to prevent wear.
Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):
-
Bushings (Critical): Place two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil into each bushing. This oil provides a high-strength micro-film that mimics the performance of a ball bearing, significantly reducing the energy required to spin the spool.
-
Worm Shaft (Level Wind): Apply one drop to the worm gear. Using Deuthlon Cast Lube here instead of grease is a major performance upgrade, as it allows the line guide to move across the frame with minimal resistance.
-
Spool Shaft: Wipe a thin film of oil along the length of the shaft to prevent oxidation.
4. Reassembly and Testing
-
Level Wind Integration: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly.
-
Internal Stack: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and main gear assembly. Ensure the springs are properly seated before closing the side plate.
-
Side Plate: Reattach the side plate screws. Do not over-tighten, as the screws tap directly into the graphite/composite frame.
-
Tensioning: Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.
Technical Performance Note
The Ambassadeur 10 is a durable, no-frills reel. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are effectively "over-engineering" the lubrication for this model. This prevents the common problem of the brass bushings wearing down the spool shaft and ensures that the mechanical retrieve remains smooth even under the pressure of a heavy catch.
