Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 1500C (Foot Number 77-09-00)

The Ambassadeur 1500C (77-09-00) is a first-generation classic produced in September 1977. This specific era is highly coveted by finesse anglers for its narrower spool and exceptional "Free Spool" capabilities. Unlike later models, the 77-09-00 features vintage tolerances that respond beautifully to high-end modern synthetic lubricants.

Tools and Preparation

  • Screwdrivers: Fine-tip flathead (hollow-ground preferred) to prevent slipping.

  • Cleaning Solvent: Degreaser or high-grade Isopropyl alcohol.

  • Lubrication: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube (Reel Oil).

  • Organization: A magnetic parts tray is recommended for the small clips and springs unique to the 1500C.

1. External Teardown

  1. The Handle: Remove the handle nut retainer screw, followed by the 10mm nut. Slide the handle, the tension washer, and the star drag off the drive shaft.

  2. Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate. Carefully pull the plate away. Take note of the mechanical anti-reverse dog; in these 1970s models, it is a small metal piece that can fall out if the plate is tilted.

  3. Spool Removal: Pull the spool assembly from the frame. On the 77-09-00, the two centrifugal brake blocks sit loosely on the pins; ensure they do not drop out and disappear.

2. Deep Cleaning the Drive System

Vintage grease from 1977 often turns into a waxy substance that hinders performance.

  • Drive Shaft & Gears: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. Clean the drive shaft thoroughly until it is polished.

  • Pinion and Yoke: Remove the pinion gear and its plastic yoke. Clean the inside of the pinion where it interacts with the spool shaft—this is the most common area for friction buildup.

  • Level Wind: Unscrew the worm gear cover and remove the worm shaft and the pawl. Scrub the teeth of the worm gear to ensure no grit is trapped in the "diamond" grooves.

3. Lubrication with Deuthlon Technology

Because the 1500C is designed for light-tackle fishing, the lubricants must be "active" but not "heavy."

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:

  • Main Gear: Apply a thin, surgical coating of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the teeth. This grease is formulated to reduce gear "chatter," which is common in these older brass-gear models.

  • Yoke and Kick Lever: Apply grease to the sliding surfaces of the yoke and the clutch engagement plate. This provides a smoother "thunk" when you engage the reel.

  • Anti-Reverse Dog: Apply a tiny dab to the anti-reverse dog to keep it quiet and responsive.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):

  • Spool Bearings: Clean the two ball bearings and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This specific oil has an ultra-low viscosity that allows the lightweight 1500C spool to start spinning with almost zero lure weight.

  • Spool Shaft: Apply a light film of oil to the entire length of the spool shaft that passes through the pinion gear.

  • Worm Shaft: For maximum casting distance, use Deuthlon Reel Oil on the worm shaft instead of grease. It keeps the level wind moving rapidly during the cast.

4. Reassembly and Fine-Tuning

  1. Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the groove before tightening the cap.

  2. Internal Assembly: Replace the pinion, yoke, and springs. Reinstall the main gear and drag stack.

  3. Spool Seating: Place the brake blocks on the spool pins. Slide the spool into the frame.

  4. Closing the Plate: Align the side plate with the drive shaft and the anti-reverse dog. Secure the three thumb screws.

  5. Tensioning: Adjust the cast control knob (on the side plate) until the spool has just a "micro-click" of side play.

Maintenance Insight

The Ambassadeur 1500C (77-09-00) is a mechanical icon. Using Deuthlon lubricants prevents the "gear-feel" often associated with vintage reels, turning a 1970s workhorse into a tool that rivals modern finesse baitcasters in smoothness and casting distance. Regular cleaning of the level wind pawl is recommended every 10-15 outings to maintain this peak performance.
