Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 1000 (Foot Number 83-0)

The Ambassadeur 1000 (83-0), released in the early 1980s, is a unique transition model in the Abu Garcia lineage. Unlike the classic round 5000 series, the 1000 features a streamlined, narrower profile and a proprietary internal configuration that requires specific attention during maintenance. With its fixed-axle spool design, keeping friction to a minimum is the primary goal.

Essential Tools and Lubricants

  • Tools: Small flathead screwdriver, 10mm nut driver, and tweezers for small E-clips.

  • Cleaning: Isopropyl alcohol or a non-polar solvent.

  • Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease (specifically for the drive gears and mechanical linkages).

  • Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube) (for bearings and high-speed friction points).

1. External Teardown

  1. Handle Side: Back off the star drag completely. Remove the handle nut locking screw, the 10mm nut, and the handle. Remove the star drag and the two curved tension washers (spring washers).

  2. Side Plates: Unscrew the three knurled thumb screws on the handle side. Pull the right side plate away from the frame.

  3. Spool Access: Slide the spool out of the frame. Note the position of the brake blocks (centrifugal weights) on the spool's pins.

2. Cleaning the Internal Components

The 83-0 model often suffers from "grease-drag" where old lubricants have solidified.

  • The Frame: Wipe down the inner frame and the level wind area.

  • The Drive Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack from the drive shaft. In the 83-0, the drag washers are often dry-fiber; clean these with a dry cloth only unless you are replacing them.

  • The Pinion: Pull the pinion gear and the plastic yoke. Clean the inner bore of the pinion gear where it contacts the spool shaft, as this is a high-friction zone.

3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon

The choice of lubricant is critical for this model because its narrow spool relies on low-torque startup for light lures.

Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease Application:

  • Main Gear: Apply a small amount to the teeth. Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease is engineered to stay on the teeth rather than being slung off into the casing.

  • Level Wind: Apply a light coat to the worm gear. This grease provides a "dust-repellent" quality that prevents the level wind from jamming during heavy use.

  • Clutch Linkage: Lightly coat the metal-to-metal contact points where the thumb bar engages the release mechanism.

Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube) Application:

  • Spool Shaft: Apply one drop to each end of the spool shaft. Because the 1000 uses a fixed shaft, the oil must be high-velocity to ensure long casts.

  • Bushings/Bearings: Place one drop on the spool's support bearings. Deuthlon Reel Oil creates a micro-film that significantly outlasts standard oils.

  • Line Guide: A single drop on the pawl will ensure the level wind moves across the frame with zero resistance.

4. Reassembly Notes

  1. Pinion Alignment: Ensure the pinion gear yoke is seated correctly over the two small springs. If the yoke is tilted, the reel will not engage properly.

  2. Centrifugal Brakes: Before sliding the spool back into the frame, ensure the brake blocks are pushed inward toward the shaft to prevent them from falling out or getting pinched.

  3. Side Plate Alignment: Line up the drive shaft with the hole in the side plate. Tighten the thumb screws in a "star pattern" (tighten one, then the one opposite) to ensure the plate is seated perfectly level.

Technical Performance Note

The Ambassadeur 1000 (83-0) lacks the modern infinite anti-reverse bearings of today's reels, relying instead on a mechanical anti-reverse dog. Applying a tiny dab of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the anti-reverse dog will dampen the "clicking" sound and prevent the mechanical components from wearing down prematurely.
