Advanced Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500TCCF (16 00)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500TCCF (Trolling Collection Carbon Fiber) is a specialized variant of the classic 6500 chassis, specifically tuned for the constant pressure and corrosive environments of trolling. The "16 00" model features a reinforced drive train and the signature synchronized levelwind system. Unlike CT models, which are stripped for distance casting, this reel prioritizes line management and durability. Maintaining the gear synchronization is the most vital aspect of servicing this particular model.

Step 1: Disassembly and Solvent Cleaning

Start by removing the handle nut retainer, the 10mm nut, and the handle arm. Back off the star drag wheel and remove the tension washers. Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side plate to separate the gearbox from the frame.

  • Spool Removal: Pull the spool out to access the interior of the frame.

  • Degreasing: Submerge the brass main gear and pinion in a cleaning solvent to strip away old, oxidized lubricants.

  • Frame Inspection: Clean the interior frame rails and the area surrounding the line guide to ensure no salt deposits remain.

Step 2: Drive Train and Gear Lubrication

The 6500TCCF utilizes a high-torque gear set to handle the drag resistance of trolling lures and heavy fish. These components require a lubricant that stays put under pressure.

  • Main Gear and Pinion Gear: Apply a generous coating of marine-grade grease to the teeth of the Main Gear and the Pinion Gear.

  • Technique: Use a small brush to work the grease into the gear teeth. This creates a "cushion" that dampens vibration and prevents the metal surfaces from grinding together under the high-tension loads common in trolling applications.

Step 3: Synchronized Levelwind and Idler System

Because this is not a CT model, it contains a specialized internal gear train that keeps the line guide moving at all times. This system includes the plastic idler gear and the worm gear.

  • Idler Gear: Locate the plastic gear on the non-handle side of the frame. This gear bridges the power between the spool and the levelwind. Inspect the teeth for any debris or "mushrooming."

  • Levelwind Worm Gear: Inspect the spiral grooves of the worm shaft for any trapped grit.

  • Recommended Lubricant: For the Idler Gear and the Levelwind Worm Gear, apply Deuthlon oil.

  • The Deuthlon Benefit: This specific oil provides a high-speed, low-drag barrier that is significantly more effective than grease for synchronized parts. It prevents the plastic idler gear from wearing down while ensuring the levelwind tracks across the spool with zero hesitation, which is essential for perfect line lay and accurate depth control.

Step 4: Spool Bearings and Cast Control

The 16 00 series uses a centrifugal brake system to manage the spool's inertia.

  • Brake Race: Wipe the brass brake ring inside the side plate with a dry cloth. It must remain free of oil to provide consistent friction.

  • Spool Bearings: Clean the bearings in solvent and dry them completely. Apply a single drop of light bearing oil to each. Do not use grease here, as it will make the spool feel sluggish.

Final Reassembly and Functional Test

  1. Alignment: Slide the spool into the frame, ensuring the spool-end gear meshes perfectly with the Idler Gear.

  2. Closure: Reattach the right side plate and hand-tighten the thumb screws.

  3. Verification: Rotate the handle and observe the line guide. It should travel smoothly from one side to the other. If you feel any resistance, re-check the Deuthlon oil application on the worm gear and ensure the pawl is seated correctly.

Maintenance Lubrication Summary

Component Lubricant Choice Primary Function
Main Gear / Pinion Marine Grease Wear protection and noise reduction
Idler Gear Deuthlon Oil Protects plastic-to-metal contact points
Worm Gear (Levelwind) Deuthlon Oil Ensures smooth, rapid line oscillation
Spool Bearings High-Speed Oil Maximizes spool startup and smoothness

By following this maintenance protocol and utilizing Deuthlon oil on the synchronized components, you ensure the Ambassadeur 6500TCCF remains a reliable, high-performance tool for your trolling arsenal.
