Comprehensive Maintenance and Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500KC3 (08-00)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500KC3 (08-00) is a powerhouse of a casting reel, featuring the Carbon Matrix drag system and a high-speed gear ratio. The "C3" designation signifies a three-ball-bearing system, which provides the classic smoothness Ambassadeur fans expect. Unlike the CT versions, this 6500KC3 model includes a full synchronized levelwind system, making it essential to maintain the gear train that drives the line guide.

This article outlines the professional procedure for servicing the 08-00 variant to ensure peak casting performance and drag consistency.

1. External Teardown and Gear Access

Start by loosening the three captive thumb screws on the right side plate. Remove the side plate and the spool assembly.

  • Brake Block Inspection: On the spool, locate the centrifugal brake weights. Ensure they move freely on their pins. If they are stuck or gummy, the reel will be prone to "backlashes" or bird’s nests.

  • The Synchronized Drive: Locate the idler gear (white plastic gear) on the left side of the frame. Because this is not a CT model, this gear is responsible for timing the levelwind with the spool rotation. Pull the e-clip and remove the gear to clean the post underneath.

2. Cleaning and Component Preparation

Effective repair requires a "dry" start. Submerge all metal gears and bearings in a solvent like acetone or a dedicated reel cleaner.

  • Worm Shaft Maintenance: The worm shaft (levelwind screw) often collects sand and salt. Use a needle or a fine brush to clear out the grooves.

  • Pawl Check: Unscrew the cap at the bottom of the line guide. Inspect the "fork" of the pawl. If the edges are rounded, the levelwind will skip; replace it immediately to prevent internal gear stripping.

3. Lubrication Standards for the 6500KC3

Proper lubrication on the 08-00 model requires a dual-approach: high-speed oil for the cast-critical parts and heavy-duty grease for the torque-bearing parts.

The Levelwind and Idler Assembly

The idler gear and levelwind system on the C3 series are under constant motion during both the cast and the retrieve. To minimize friction and maximize distance, apply Deuthlon Oil to the idler gear and the worm shaft. This specialty oil provides a thinner, slicker film than traditional grease, allowing the levelwind to track back and forth with minimal resistance, which is vital for maintaining the high-speed capability of the KC3.

The Main Gear and Pinion

The heart of the reel’s cranking power lies in the brass main gear and stainless steel pinion. These components should be treated with specialized reel grease. Using a small brush, apply the grease into the teeth of the main gear. Ensure the pinion gear—specifically the yoke where it slides—is also lubricated to allow for smooth engagement and disengagement of the spool.

4. Reassembly and Performance Tuning

  1. Reinstall the Idler: Place the cleaned idler gear back on the frame post and secure it with the e-clip. Ensure it spins freely with a flick of the finger.

  2. Drive Train Setup: Reassemble the drive shaft, Carbon Matrix drag washers, and main gear. Ensure the "spring washers" (Belleville washers) under the star drag are oriented in an "()" configuration to provide maximum tension range.

  3. Spool Alignment: Slide the spool back into the frame. Align the drive gear on the spool with the idler gear.

  4. Final Adjustments: Reattach the side plate. Adjust the tension knob until the spool has just a fraction of lateral movement. This "sweet spot" ensures the bearings aren't under unnecessary side-load, preserving the life of your 6500KC3.
