Comprehensive Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CT (0700)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CT (0700) is a legendary "non-levelwind" casting reel, prized by surf casters and tournament casters for its simplified design and high-velocity spool. Unlike the C3 or C4 series, the 0700 CT frame lacks a line guide system, reducing friction and mechanical drag during the cast.
Proper maintenance is critical to preserving its longevity and ensuring that the centrifugal braking system remains consistent.
Tools and Lubricants Required
To perform a professional-grade service, gather the following:
-
Wrenches: 10mm nut driver for the handle nut.
-
Screwdrivers: Small flathead and Phillips head.
-
Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated reel cleaner.
-
Grease: High-quality marine-grade reel grease.
-
Oil: Deuthlon Semi-Fluid Grease or Reel Oil (specifically for the idler gear) and thin high-speed oil for spool bearings.
Step 1: External Disassembly and Handle Sideplate
-
Remove the Handle Assembly: Back off the handle nut retainer screw, remove the 10mm nut, and pull the handle, star drag, and spring washers. Note the orientation of the "Belleville" washers (curved washers) to ensure they are reinstalled in the same tension-heavy configuration.
-
Open the Sideplate: Loosen the three captive thumb screws on the handle sideplate. Gently pull the sideplate away from the frame.
-
Spool Extraction: Slide the spool out of the frame. On the 6500CT, you will notice the absence of a levelwind worm gear, which simplifies the internal cavity significantly.
Step 2: Servicing the Gear Train
The 0700 model features a robust brass main gear and a stainless steel pinion gear.
-
Main Gear & Pinion: Remove the gear sleeve and the main gear. Wipe away old, oxidized grease. Apply a fresh, even coat of quality reel grease to the teeth of the main gear and the neck of the pinion gear. Avoid over-greasing, as excess lubricant can migrate into the drag washers.
-
Drag System: This reel typically utilizes Carbon Matrix drag washers. These should be kept dry or very lightly skimmed with specialized drag grease. If they appear glazed, wipe them clean with a lint-free cloth.
Step 3: Idler Gear Maintenance
The Ambassadeur 6500CT 0700 utilizes a small plastic idler gear located on the inside of the handle sideplate. Even though this reel lacks a levelwind, the idler gear still facilitates the engagement of the mechanical systems.
Technical Recommendation: For the idler gear, apply Deuthlon oil. Its high-cling properties and low viscosity ensure the plastic gear spins freely without the "dragging" effect caused by heavy greases, which can impede casting distance.
Step 4: Spool Bearings and Centrifugal Brakes
Because the 6500CT is designed for distance, the spool bearings are the heart of the reel.
-
Bearing Cleanse: Remove the two spool bearings (one in the sideplate, one on the spool shaft or opposite plate). Soak them in solvent to remove any grit.
-
Lubrication: Apply one drop of thin, high-speed oil to each bearing.
-
Brake Blocks: Ensure the centrifugal brake weights (blocks) on the spool's brake hub are clean and dry. Any oil on these weights will significantly reduce their braking effectiveness, leading to overruns (birds' nests).
Step 5: Reassembly and Testing
-
Frame Inspection: Clean the interior of the CT frame. Ensure the spool's "shoulders" are free of debris.
-
Final Marriage: Reinsert the spool into the frame. Align the handle sideplate, ensuring the pinion gear meshes correctly with the spool shaft. Tighten the thumb screws.
-
Mechanical Check: Reinstall the star drag and handle. Engage the freespool and spin the spool; it should whisper-quiet and rotate for an extended period. Tighten the drag to ensure smooth engagement without "jerking."
By utilizing Deuthlon oil on the idler gear and premium grease on the main and pinion gears, you ensure the 6500CT 0700 remains a powerhouse for long-distance shore fishing.
