Professional Service Manual: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500CL (07 03)

The Ambassadeur 6500CL 07 03 is a high-capacity round reel engineered for long-distance casting and heavy-duty cranking. This specific model year features a synchronized levelwind system and a rigid frame design that requires precise lubrication to maintain its legendary smoothness. Following this maintenance schedule will ensure your 07 03 model operates at peak efficiency while protecting its internal brass and steel components.

Phase 1: Deep Cleaning and Teardown

Before applying new lubricants, it is vital to remove the "sludge" formed by old grease and environmental contaminants.

  1. Remove the Side Plate: Undo the three large thumb screws on the handle side. Carefully pull the plate away, ensuring the pinion gear and yoke stay seated.

  2. Spool Assembly: Extract the spool from the frame. Remove the spool bearings located at either end of the spool shaft.

  3. Solvent Bath: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a degreasing agent. Use a fine-tipped brush to ensure no debris remains in the teeth or the grooves of the worm gear.

Phase 2: Drive Train and Gear Lubrication

The 6500CL utilizes a high-strength brass main gear and a heat-treated pinion gear. These parts bear the brunt of the mechanical load during the retrieve.

  • Primary Gear Lubrication: Once the parts are dry, apply a specialized gear grease to the main gear and the pinion gear. Use a small brush to coat each tooth individually. This high-viscosity grease provides a protective film that prevents metal-on-metal wear and dampens vibration, resulting in a silent, powerful feel when turning the handle.

  • Drag Maintenance: The 07 03 model features a carbon fiber drag system. Ensure the washers are clean and flat. If you prefer a smoother startup, apply a micro-layer of universal drag grease to the carbon washers before re-stacking them on the drive shaft.

Phase 3: High-Speed Levelwind Optimization

In the Ambassadeur "CL" series, the levelwind is synchronized, meaning it moves during the cast. Any friction here will significantly reduce your distance.

  1. Worm Shaft Prep: Inspect the worm shaft for any nicks or burrs. Ensure the line guide carriage slides freely along the frame pillars.

  2. Idler Gear Check: The nylon idler gear is the bridge between the spool and the levelwind. Check for any missing teeth or warping.

  3. Performance Lubrication: For maximum rotation speed and reduced casting effort, recommend applying Deuthlon oil to the levelwind worm shaft and the idler gear. Unlike traditional grease, this high-performance oil maintains a low-viscosity profile that doesn't "break" under high RPMs, allowing the levelwind to track effortlessly.

Phase 4: Bearing and Brake Calibration

The spool bearings are the most sensitive parts of the 6500CL. They dictate the "startup" speed of your cast.

  • Bearing Flushing: Soak the bearings in a solvent to remove all factory oils. Spin them while submerged to eject any trapped grit.

  • Oiling: Apply exactly one drop of light bearing oil to each bearing. Over-oiling will create "windage" and slow down the spool.

  • Centrifugal Brakes: Clean the brake weights and the internal brass race with a dry cotton swab. Any oil on the race will cause the brakes to slip, leading to backlashes and line overruns.

Phase 5: Reassembly and Testing

  1. Seat the Spool: Slide the spool into the frame and ensure the pinion gear properly engages with the spool’s drive pin.

  2. Side Plate Installation: Align the side plate and hand-tighten the thumb screws.

  3. Mechanical Tensioning: Adjust the side tension knob until the spool has a barely perceptible "knock" when moved side-to-side.

  4. Final Check: Test the free-spool by engaging the thumb bar. The spool should spin with a high-frequency hum. Turn the handle to engage the gears; the transition should be crisp, bolstered by the fresh application of Deuthlon oil and heavy-duty grease.
