Technical Repair Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6500C (Model 81-08-00)

The 81-08-00 model is a vintage high-speed Ambassadeur 6500C that represents the pinnacle of early '80s Swedish engineering. Featuring stainless steel ball bearings and a synchronized levelwind, this reel is built for long-distance casting and heavy-duty reliability. Because the levelwind system moves in tandem with the spool during the cast, any friction in the oscillation chain will drastically reduce performance. A professional service requires stripping away decades of old, "varnished" lubricants and replacing them with high-efficiency modern synthetics.

Step 1: Systematic Teardown

To ensure a thorough repair, separate the reel into its primary mechanical groups.

  1. Right Side Plate: Loosen the three bridge screws and pull the handle-side plate away. This exposes the drive bridge and the main gear assembly.

  2. Spool and Bearings: Slide the spool out of the frame. This "C" model utilizes stainless steel ball bearings. Check the bearing pockets in the side plates and use a fine pick to remove the wire retaining clips for deep cleaning.

  3. The Drive Train: Remove the handle, star drag, and the side plate cover. Lift the brass main gear and the drag washer stack off the drive shaft. Inspect the pinion gear for any signs of flattening on the teeth.

  4. Levelwind Assembly: Unscrew the pawl cap from the line carriage, remove the pawl, and slide the worm gear out from the frame's protective tube.

Step 2: Cleaning and Degreasing

For a reel from 1981, the original grease has likely turned into a waxy, sticky residue that acts as a brake on internal moving parts.

  • Metal Parts: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and worm shaft in a high-grade degreasing solvent. Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the roots of the gear teeth until they are "surgically" clean.

  • Bearing Refresh: Soak the ball bearings in isopropyl alcohol. Spin them while submerged to eject any micro-grit trapped between the races. Once dry, they should spin silently.

  • Frame and Idler Gear: Wipe the interior of the frame clean. Pay special attention to the plastic idler gear; ensure the teeth are free of debris, as this gear synchronizes the levelwind with the spool's rotation.

Step 3: Modern Lubrication Logic

Achieving professional-grade performance requires using the correct viscosity of lubricant on specific mechanical zones.

The Casting Chain (Levelwind and Idler Gears)

The levelwind system is the primary source of mechanical drag during the cast. To minimize this resistance, apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the worm shaft and the teeth of the idler gears. This specialized synthetic oil provides an ultra-slick, low-friction surface that won't thicken or attract excessive grit, allowing the line guide to move effortlessly across the spool and maximizing your total casting distance.

The Power Train (Main and Pinion Gears)

The drive gears handle the heavy torque of the retrieve. Apply a thin, even coat of high-viscosity gear grease to every tooth of the brass main gear. This grease acts as a hydraulic cushion between the metal surfaces, preventing wear and ensuring the gear mesh feels smooth and silent under the load of a fish.

Step 4: Reassembly and Calibration

  1. Rebuild the Gear Bridge: Place the pinion gear back into the yoke and seat the main gear on the drive shaft. Ensure the drag washers are clean and stacked in the correct factory sequence.

  2. Bearing Lubrication: Place one drop of Deuthlon oil into each cleaned ball bearing. This provides immediate lubrication for high-RPM rotation without the "slow-down" effect of heavy grease.

  3. Levelwind Integration: Reinstall the worm gear and line carriage. Place a single drop of oil on the pawl before tightening the pawl cap.

  4. Closing the Reel: Realign the side plates with the frame and tighten the screws snugly. Reinstall the star drag and handle.

Technical Performance Summary

Once reassembled, adjust the mechanical tension knob until the spool has zero side-to-side play. Engage the thumb bar and give the spool a flick; with Deuthlon oil on the high-speed oscillation components and fresh grease on the gears, the 6500C 81-08-00 will cast silently and retrieve with a solid, buttery feel that exceeds original factory specifications.
