In-Depth Repair and Maintenance Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C (99-06)
The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6000C models manufactured between 1999 and 2006 represent a highly refined era of the Swedish round reel. These "C" designated reels utilize a dual stainless steel ball-bearing system and a synchronized levelwind. Whether you own the classic red or the sleek black version from this period, maintaining the precision of the brass-to-steel gear interface and the fluidity of the oscillation system is paramount for long-term performance.
1. Disassembly and Component Inspection
To ensure a thorough repair, the reel must be stripped down to its core components.
-
Remove the Handle Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws on the right side of the reel. Pull the side plate assembly away from the frame.
-
Extract the Spool: Slide the spool out of the frame housing. Inspect the two centrifugal brake weights (blocks) located on the spool's brake hub. Ensure they are free of oil or debris, as any contamination here will lead to inconsistent casting.
-
Component Cleaning: Submerge the main gear, pinion gear, and the worm shaft in a degreasing agent. Use a nylon brush to remove old, emulsified grease from the gear teeth. Clean the interior of the side plate to remove any salt or grit buildup.
2. Drivetrain Lubrication (Grease)
The drivetrain is responsible for the reel's cranking power and requires a lubricant that stays in place under high rotational pressure.
-
Main Gear Service: Apply Deuthlon Grease to the teeth of the large brass main gear. This grease provides a resilient film that prevents metal-on-metal wear and significantly reduces gear noise during the retrieve.
-
Pinion Gear: Apply a coat of Deuthlon Grease to the Pinion Gear and the yoke assembly. This ensures the gear slides smoothly on the spool shaft when engaging or disengaging the free-spool mechanism.
3. Levelwind and Idler System Maintenance (Oil)
The 99-06 Ambassadeur series utilizes a synchronized levelwind system. Because the levelwind components are always in motion—even during the cast—using the correct light-viscosity lubricant is critical for maximizing distance.
-
Worm Gear: Apply Deuthlon Oil to the worm shaft (the spiraled rod). This oil allows the line guide pawl to oscillate rapidly with minimal friction, ensuring even line lay and reduced casting drag.
-
Idler Gears: Locate the plastic Idler Gears mounted to the frame and the drive plate. These gears synchronize the spool’s rotation with the levelwind. Lubricate the idler gear teeth and their mounting posts strictly with Deuthlon Oil. Avoid using grease on these plastic parts, as grease creates "startup inertia" that slows down the spool.
4. Precision Bearing and Spool Care
The stainless steel ball bearings in the 6000C are the primary support for high-speed spool rotation.
-
Bearing Lubrication: After cleaning the bearings in solvent and drying them completely, apply exactly one drop of Deuthlon Oil to each bearing. Over-oiling can actually lead to "hydraulic braking," which reduces spin time.
-
Mechanical Tensioner: Wipe the copper shims inside the tension caps clean. Apply a microscopic film of Deuthlon Oil to the ends of the spool spindle where they meet these shims to prevent friction heat during high-speed casts.
5. Reassembly and Calibration
-
Re-seat the Spool: Place the spool into the frame, ensuring the centrifugal weights are seated on their pins.
-
Mount the Side Plate: Align the pinion gear with the spool shaft. Slide the side plate on and tighten the thumb screws finger-tight.
-
Handle and Drag Stack: Reinstall the star drag, ensuring the two spring washers are "nested" (facing each other like brackets) to provide the correct tension range. Replace the handle and lock nut.
-
Testing: Engage the free-spool and spin the spool; it should rotate freely and silently. Turn the handle to verify that the levelwind tracks smoothly across the entire width of the spool.
