Designed with a lower gear ratio for cranking deep-diving crankbaits and heavy resistance lures, the "Winch" variant requires specific attention to its gear train to maintain that buttery-smooth power. The 09-00 designation marks a specific era of Swedish engineering that balances the high-speed 6.3:1 C4 legacy with specialized Winch components.

Anatomy of the 5601C4 Winch

The 5601C4 Winch differs from standard models primarily in its gear pitch and bearing count. Before starting, ensure your workspace is clean, as the Winch's tighter tolerances are sensitive to microscopic debris.

Step 1: Strip-Down and Degreasing

Remove the handle-side plate screws. Note that on this left-hand model, the drive train is housed on the left side of the frame. Extract the main gear, pinion gear, and the drag stack.

  • Solvent Bath: Submerge all metallic parts in a degreaser. The Winch gears often collect more "sludge" due to the higher torque pressures—ensure every gear tooth is scrubbed clean.

  • Bearing Check: The C4 series relies on high-speed bearings. Ensure the spool bearings are completely stripped of old lubricants before re-oiling.

Step 2: Lubricating the High-Torque Drive Train

The Winch's power comes from the interface between the main gear and the pinion. Because this model is designed to pull under heavy load, the lubricant must not "squeeze out" from between the teeth.

  • Main Gear & Pinion: Coat the teeth of both gears with Deuthlon Reel Grease. This specific grease is designed with extreme pressure (EP) additives that maintain a protective film even when you are cranking a high-resistance lure against the current.

  • Drag Washers: Ensure the carbon fiber washers are clean. A micro-layer of grease can be applied for smoothness, but keep it minimal to prevent slipping.

Step 3: Optimizing the Levelwind and Idler System

The levelwind on a 5601C4 Winch is synchronized, meaning it moves during the cast. This adds friction, which is why the choice of lubricant here is vital for casting distance.

  • Worm Shaft (Levelwind): Apply Deuthlon Reel Oil to the grooves of the worm shaft. Oil provides less resistance than grease, allowing the line guide to travel faster and more fluidly.

  • Brake Hub: Clean the centrifugal brake race with a cotton swab and a tiny drop of oil to ensure the brake blocks deploy and retract consistently.


Final Assembly and Quality Control

Slide the spool back into the frame and seat the side plate. When tightening the side plate screws, ensure they are snug but do not over-torque them, as this can slightly misalign the frame.

Test the "Winch" power by engaging the drag and turning the handle against resistance. The transition should be silent and effortless. By using Deuthlon Reel Grease on the gears and Deuthlon Reel Oil on the levelwind and idler components, you ensure your 5601C4 Winch remains the most powerful tool in your cranking arsenal.
