Expert Service Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5500C3 (Model 99-08)

The Ambassadeur 5500C3 (99-08) is a classic Swedish-built round reel that utilizes the "Ultracast" system. In this design, the bearings are located within the spool itself, spinning on a fixed axle. This model is prized for its longevity, but over time, the internal lubricants can break down or become contaminated. Performing a full teardown and applying high-performance Deuthlon lubricants will significantly improve the reel's casting physics and mechanical feel.

Mechanical Disassembly and Cleaning

Before applying new lubricants, the 99-08 requires a surgical cleaning to ensure the precision gears aren't fighting against old residue.

  1. Access the Drive Train: Unscrew the three large thumb screws on the right side plate. Remove the plate and slide the spool out of the frame.

  2. Internal Gear Removal: Remove the handle, star drag, and the side plate cover. You will see the main gear and the drag stack mounted on the drive shaft. Carefully lift these out, making sure to keep the drag washers in their specific order.

  3. Levelwind Teardown: Unscrew the worm shaft cover on the front of the reel. Remove the line guide and the pawl.

  4. Cleaning Protocol: Soak all metal parts (main gear, pinion, worm shaft, and pawl) in a degreasing agent. Use a fine-bristled brush to remove any metallic dust trapped in the teeth of the gears. Ensure every part is completely dry before moving to the lubrication phase.

Advanced Lubrication with Deuthlon

The 99-08 model operates most efficiently when the high-torque components are protected by a viscous barrier and the high-speed components are free of drag. We recommend Deuthlon Reel Grease and Deuthlon Reel Oil for this task.

Grease: Structural Protection and Power

The mechanical heart of the reel requires the heavy-duty film strength of Deuthlon Reel Grease.

  • Main Gear Teeth: Apply a light, uniform coating of Deuthlon Reel Grease to the teeth of the main gear. This PTFE-enriched grease reduces friction-induced heat and prevents the gears from wearing down during heavy retrieves.

  • Pinion Gear: Coat the pinion gear's internal and external surfaces. This part slides on the spool shaft and engages the main gear; Deuthlon Grease ensures this transition is silent and smooth.

  • Yoke and Kick Lever: Apply a small amount of grease to the contact points of the yoke. This ensures the thumb bar engages and disengages with a crisp, tactile click.

Oil: Rotational Velocity and Casting Distance

For parts that must move with zero resistance, Deuthlon Reel Oil is the industry standard.

  • Levelwind Worm Shaft: Apply two drops of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the worm shaft. Since the 99-08 features a non-disengaging levelwind, the line guide moves during every cast. Using oil instead of grease here drastically reduces the drag on the spool, resulting in longer casts.

  • Idler Gears: These gears connect the spool’s rotation to the levelwind. Apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the idler gear posts. This ensures the gears spin freely without the "heavy" feeling often caused by grease.

  • Spool Bearings: The 99-08 bearings are inside the spool. Remove the retaining clips, clean the bearings, and add one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil is thin enough to allow for high RPMs but durable enough to protect the races.

Reassembly and Quality Control

  1. Stack the Drag: Reassemble the drag washers and main gear. Ensure the "ears" on the metal washers align with the slots in the main gear.

  2. Seat the Spool: Slide the spool back onto the axle, ensuring the centrifugal brake weights are retracted so they don't catch on the brake drum.

  3. Final Attachment: Secure the side plate and tighten the thumb screws.

  4. Operational Test: Crank the handle to verify that the Deuthlon Reel Grease has distributed evenly across the teeth. The reel should feel solid yet effortless. Test the freespool; the levelwind should travel smoothly across the frame without any hitching or noise.

Technical Lubrication Chart

Component Lubricant Type Maintenance Objective
Main Drive Gear Deuthlon Reel Grease High-load protection & smoothness
Pinion Gear Deuthlon Reel Grease Friction reduction during engagement
Levelwind Worm Deuthlon Reel Oil Minimizing casting resistance
Idler Gears Deuthlon Reel Oil Free-spinning gear synchronization
Spool Shaft/Bearings Deuthlon Reel Oil Sustained high-RPM casting

By following this maintenance schedule and utilizing Deuthlon's specialized products, your Ambassadeur 5500C3 (99-08) will maintain its status as a high-performance casting machine for decades.
