Precision Tuning Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 Winch (Foot Number 89-0)

The Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 Winch, specifically the 89-0 series from the late 1980s, is a specialized tool designed for high-torque applications. Unlike the standard 5000 models, the "Winch" features a lower gear ratio (typically 3.8:1), providing massive cranking power for deep-diving crankbaits and heavy resistance lures. This mechanical advantage places unique stress on the internal drive train, making high-performance lubrication essential.

To maintain the structural integrity and smooth power delivery of this model, we recommend a combination of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Reel Power Oil. These lubricants are engineered to withstand the extreme pressures generated by the Winch's low-gear mechanical advantage.

Phase 1: Disassembly and Inspection

Begin by removing the handle nut, handle, and star drag. Unscrew the three thumb screws on the right side plate to reveal the drive assembly. The 89-0 model features a robust main gear and a specialized drag stack designed for steady pressure.

Remove the spool and the levelwind components. It is critical to strip away all old, contaminated grease using a solvent. Inspect the main gear teeth for any signs of "rolling" or wear, as the high-torque nature of the Winch can stress the brass components over time. Ensure all surfaces are completely dry before re-lubricating.

Phase 2: High-Torque Gear Lubrication

The core of the Winch is its power-focused gear set. Because these gears handle more load than high-speed models, they require a grease with high film strength.

  • Main and Pinion Gears: Apply Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease generously but precisely to the teeth of the main gear. The PTFE-rich formula of this grease provides a "cushion" between the teeth, which is vital for the low-speed, high-pressure rotation of the Winch. Lightly coat the pinion gear and the yoke. This ensures that the transition between free-spool and engagement remains crisp and protected against metal-to-metal galling.

Phase 3: Levelwind and Idler System Service

The levelwind on the 5000 Winch is synchronized, meaning it tracks with the line during both retrieve and cast. To ensure this doesn't sap the power of your retrieve, the system must remain as frictionless as possible.

  • Worm Shaft and Levelwind: Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the worm shaft. Using oil instead of grease here prevents the "clogging" effect that can occur when winching lures through heavy cover.

  • Idler Gears: These gears transfer the torque from the main drive to the levelwind. Apply Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the idler gear posts. The thin viscosity of the oil allows these gears to rotate effortlessly under load, ensuring that all your cranking energy goes into moving the lure rather than overcoming internal friction.

Phase 4: Spool Performance and Bushing Care

While the Winch is built for power, it still needs to cast effectively. The 89-0 model relies on precision bushings or early-model bearings that require light lubrication.

  • Spool Shaft: Clean the spool spindle and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to each end.

  • Tension Shims: Apply a tiny amount of Deuthlon Reel Power Oil to the copper shims inside the cast control caps. This provides a hydraulic cushion that prevents the shaft from wearing into the shim during high-pressure retrieves.

Final Assembly and Calibration

Reinstall the spool and secure the side plate. Adjust the cast control knob to eliminate side-play in the spool. Once the handle is tightened, cycle the reel under a light load to allow the Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to seat into the gear teeth.

By using Deuthlon's specialized lubricants—grease for the heavy-duty gear teeth and oil for the fast-moving oscillation parts—you ensure your Ambassadeur 5000 Winch retains its "tractor-like" pulling power while gaining a level of smoothness that factory lubricants cannot provide. This maintenance routine is the best way to protect your 1989 classic for the long haul.
