Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 2500CI (Foot Number 04-00)
The Ambassadeur 2500CI (04-00) is a specific and highly desirable variant of the 2500 series. The "I" in the model name signifies the Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR) system, while the 04-00 foot number marks it as a later-production model from the year 2000. Unlike the earlier "C" models that utilized a mechanical anti-reverse dog, the 2500CI relies on a one-way roller bearing, providing a rock-solid feel with zero handle back-play.
This model is a favorite for Bait Finesse System (BFS) conversions. To maintain its high-speed potential and delicate mechanical "click," precision lubrication is paramount.
Tools and Lubricants Required
-
Precision Screwdrivers: High-quality flathead to avoid marring the side plate screws.
-
Wrench: 10mm for the handle nut.
-
Cleaning Solvent: Isopropyl alcohol or a professional-grade reel degreaser.
-
Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.
-
Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).
1. External Teardown
-
Handle Side: Remove the handle nut locking screw and the 10mm nut. Slide off the handle, the tension washer, and the star drag.
-
Side Plate: Loosen the three knurled thumb screws. Carefully pull the handle side plate away from the frame.
-
The IAR Sleeve: You will see a polished stainless steel tube (the IAR sleeve) sitting on the drive shaft. Slide this off. It is the surface that the IAR bearing "clutches" onto; it must be kept pristine.
-
Spool Removal: Slide the spool out of the frame. Note the two small white centrifugal brake blocks on the spool pins.
2. Deep Cleaning the 2500CI Components
Small-frame reels like the 2500CI are hypersensitive to "grease drag."
-
Drive Train: Remove the main gear and the drag stack. Clean the teeth of the main gear and the pinion gear until no residue remains.
-
The IAR Bearing: This bearing is pressed into the side plate. Use a cotton swab dampened with solvent to clean the internal rollers. Never pack this bearing with grease, as it will cause the anti-reverse to slip.
-
Level Wind: Disassemble the worm gear and pawl. Ensure the "diamond" grooves of the worm shaft are free of old grease and grit.
3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
The goal for the 2500CI is to reduce the friction coefficient to the absolute minimum while protecting the brass gears.
Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:
-
Main and Pinion Gears: Apply a very thin, translucent coat of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the gear teeth. This grease is designed to stay in the gear mesh even under high-speed rotation, preventing metal-on-metal wear.
-
Clutch Linkage: Apply a small amount to the kick lever and the sliding surfaces of the yoke.
-
Yoke Posts: Lightly coat the two posts the pinion yoke slides on for effortless thumb-bar engagement.
Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):
-
Spool Bearings: Clean the two spool bearings and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil is essential for BFS performance, allowing the spool to spin up with the lightest lures.
-
IAR Sleeve (Critical): Apply an extremely light film of Deuthlon Reel Oil to the outside of the sleeve. This prevents corrosion and ensures the IAR rollers bite immediately without slipping.
-
Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear. Using oil instead of grease on the level wind significantly reduces the energy required to cast and retrieve.
4. Reassembly and Calibration
-
Level Wind: Reinstall the worm shaft and line guide. Ensure the pawl is seated correctly in the track.
-
Internal Stack: Replace the pinion gear, yoke, and springs. Reinstall the main gear and drag washers.
-
Sleeve and Plate: Slide the IAR sleeve onto the drive shaft. Align the side plate so the IAR bearing slides smoothly over the sleeve.
-
Final Fastening: Secure the three thumb screws. Reinstall the star drag, spring washer, and handle.
-
Spool Tension: Adjust the cast control knob until the side-to-side play in the spool just barely disappears.
Maintenance Summary
The Ambassadeur 2500CI (04-00) is widely considered one of the finest small casting reels ever made. By using Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease and Deuthlon Cast Lube, you ensure that the mechanical "instant" stop remains crisp and the casting performance remains fluid. Regular maintenance with these high-performance lubricants will allow this vintage-style reel to outperform many modern low-profile competitors.
