Overhaul Guide: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 1601C IAR (Foot Number 07-00)
The Ambassadeur 1601C IAR (07-00) is a pinnacle of Abu Garcia engineering, combining the classic small-profile aesthetic of the 1500 series with modern Instant Anti-Reverse (IAR) technology and a left-handed configuration. The "07-00" designation indicates it is a later-production model, featuring more refined tolerances than its 1970s predecessors.
Because this reel utilizes a one-way roller bearing (IAR) instead of a mechanical dog, maintenance requires a specific approach to ensure the anti-reverse doesn't slip.
Required Tools and Lubricants
-
Tools: Precision flathead screwdriver, 10mm nut driver, and a soft brush.
-
Cleaning: High-purity isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated reel degreaser.
-
Grease: Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease.
-
Oil: Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube).
1. External Disassembly
-
Handle Assembly: Remove the handle nut cap screw and the 10mm nut. Remove the left-handed handle, the spring washer, and the star drag wheel.
-
Side Plate: Unscrew the three knurled screws on the handle side. Carefully pull the side plate away from the frame.
-
IAR Bearing Note: The IAR bearing is pressed into the side plate. Do not attempt to remove it unless it is failing.
-
Spool: Slide the spool out of the frame. Note the two small centrifugal brake blocks; ensure they are kept in a secure container.
2. Deep Cleaning the Components
The 1601C IAR has very tight tolerances. Even microscopic debris can cause the reel to feel "geary."
-
The Gears: Remove the main gear and the drag washers. Clean the gear teeth thoroughly with a brush and solvent until no residue remains.
-
The IAR Sleeve: This is the metal tube that slides over the drive shaft and sits inside the one-way bearing. It must be cleaned until it is mirror-smooth.
-
Level Wind: Disassemble the worm gear and the line guide. This area is prone to collecting grit, which can damage the delicate 1600-series spool.
3. Precision Lubrication with Deuthlon
The 1601C IAR demands high-performance lubrication to maintain its finesse capabilities.
Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease:
-
Main & Pinion Gears: Apply a light, even coating of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease to the gear teeth. This grease is specifically designed to provide a "quiet" gear mesh without the heavy drag associated with standard greases.
-
Yoke and Clutch: Apply a thin layer to the yoke and the contact points of the thumb bar linkage to ensure smooth engagement.
Deuthlon Reel Oil (Cast Lube):
-
Spool Bearings: Clean the bearings thoroughly and apply one drop of Deuthlon Reel Oil to each. This oil’s ultra-low friction coefficient allows the 1601C to cast micro-lures with ease.
-
The IAR Bearing (Critical): The IAR bearing should generally be kept nearly dry or with an extremely light film of Deuthlon Reel Oil. Never put grease in the IAR bearing, as this will cause the anti-reverse to slip in cold weather.
-
Worm Shaft: Apply one drop to the worm gear to ensure the level wind doesn't rob the spool of energy during the cast.
4. Reassembly and Calibration
-
Drive Train: Reinstall the pinion gear, yoke, and the two yoke springs. Slide the main gear and drag stack back onto the drive shaft.
-
IAR Sleeve: Slide the cleaned IAR sleeve over the drive shaft, ensuring it seats fully into the drag stack.
-
Spool and Brakes: Place the centrifugal brake blocks back onto the spool pins and slide the spool into the frame.
-
Side Plate: Fit the side plate over the IAR sleeve and secure the three thumb screws.
-
Finishing: Reinstall the star drag, spring washer, and handle.
Technical Performance Insight
The Ambassadeur 1601C IAR is a "super-finesse" reel. By using Deuthlon Cast Lube, you are optimizing the reel for the lowest possible start-up inertia. This is particularly important for left-handed anglers who often use this model for precision bait-finesse (BFS) applications. Regular application of Deuthlon Reel Gear Grease will protect the brass drive train from wear, ensuring the reel remains a functional heirloom for decades.
